Look under your drivers side dash at the wiring harness there. I had the same issue before. Turned out that the addition of the aftermarket alarm had loosened a wire causing me the same issue you have..

Well, I have my answer of why the car wouldn't start.

It was out of gas. Here's what happened: the fuel gauge quit working a long time ago and I have been filling the tank by mileage. I get about 45mpg, so I would refill it at 400. It died at 383. Since it would start up and run (and drive somewhat) I figured there was no way it was out of gas.

I was wrong.

On a lark, I decided to pour a few gallons of gasoline in and it started right up. I have driven it probably 50 miles without a problem.

Lesson learned!

As far as the intermittent not starting. I inspected the clutch safety switch...and it was unplugged. Somebody (previous owner of the car) had jumpered the plug so it was "always on." I ordered a new switch and will put it in when it comes in this week.

Was that the problem? We shall see. But at least I have a running car now.

As for why the gas mileage went downhill last week, all I can think is I was stuck in a lot of stop and go traffic, which may have gotten me only 38mpg.

There's the update. Thanks everyone for their help.

You got that right, Mr. Bill.

As always, I appreciate this online community. I've gotten more useful information (and parts...thanks to GeoGlenn) from here than I could ever get locally here in Charleston, SC. Thanks!

fuel, spark, compression... gotta have all 3.

Refill every 300 miles. It's cheaper when fuel prices go up anyway

you can remove the fuel pump, and measure resistance of the float lever.
