Hard Engine Shake

Hello.

I have a 97' Geo Metro Lsi. The engine started shaking a couple days ago. It shakes more on turning it on, acceleration and turning it off. It doesn't shake when I coast. It has a small shake when it idles. The shake is like a "massage chair" hard shake. I did notice a little (what looked like) oil under the front part of the engine block, right below where the (also assuming) exhaust manifold is. The distributor cap, plugs, and lines are practically brand new(clean), and the plugs are in the proper firing order.

Could it be a head gasket issue? Or what? :hmm

Thanks.

Sir Metrologist

Sounds more like a vacuum line issue. :hmm
You could look for a loose line but I would just go ahead and replace ALL vacuum hoses. About $10 and 20 min of time.

Your in luck! evintho JUST posted the vacuum diagram with pictures!

BTW
Welcome! :banana

What is the correct firing order for the plug wires?

1, 3, 4, 2; Or at least that's what I remembered my mechanic telling me after he did it.

Thank you.

How will I be able to tell if the engine mounts are bad/going bad?

The engine might seem shifted off-center. My rear one was broken off a couple years ago (the one on the firewall); I just went ahead and replaced them all.

With a three banger it's pretty tough to tell because the engine shakes a lot, even when brand new.

It's very easy to order the incorrect one, so if you do purchase new ones, be careful. They're not difficult to replace; I'd also get new bolts, most of them are grade 8.8 M10's or M8's...but upgrading to 10.9 would be a good decision.

I believe he has the 1.3L 4 cylinder like me. Check the vacuum hose coming from the brake booster, it can cause issues like that.

The engine mounts are fine and as far as I'm able to tell my vacuum lines are fine(when my mechanic has time, he's going to double check them). However, I did discover where the fluid was leaking from! I'm not sure what this part is(the engine looks like it needs a lot of work)?
