I noticed today that the radiator fan does not seem to be working. I know this has to have some negative impact on the car at some point. The temp gauge seems to be working properly. it is about the middle when the engine is warm. Is there a point when the fan is supposed to turn on, or does it turn on in intervals? I am not losing any water/antifreeze. I just noticed this today. The temp gauge needle was pegged to hot, but nothing was overheating. I got under the hood and wiggled some wires and checked all fuses and the problem corrected itself. But that got me looking at the fan so that is why I am posting this. The only modifications I have done in the past few days is tighten the serpentine belt as I was getting squealing on cold startups. AND I added a small cell phone car charger.... it has a 12v plug and a usb port. I ran a hot wire from the battery to a fuse and to the charger. (This also gives me another question to ask.) Since the charger is always on because power comes directly from the battery would it drain the battery if I left it hooked up all the time? (I pull the fuse out for it when I am not using it) |

I assume when you said your not losing any water that you removed the radiator cap and looked to see if it was full? Did the fan start as you were moving wires? The fan doesn't turn on till the engine is near 200 deg F. And yes, the cell phone charger will drain your battery, very slowly....like in a week. |

Thanks Flash. I will monitor the fan and make sure it is working properly. As for the cell charger, If I am feeling lazy I can wire an on off switch, OR just pull the fuse when not in use. I put it in an accessible place just for this reason. Thanks GMF for your continued advice and help. |

The fans on my '96 and '98 turn on at 204 degrees according to my Scangauge ll. The cell phone charger you installed. Does it not work like a cigarette lighter? There is power to it but it does not use any. |

I believe you can check the fan by disconnecting the plug on the coolant temp sensor and putting a jumper wire into the two terminals on the plug-if the fan comes on when you turn the key on (motor off) the wiring, relays, etc. and the fan itself is good (the coolant sensor itself could be bad) if the fan doesn't come on with the jumper wire you need to check fuses, relays, plugs etc. |
