Hey guys, sorry if some has the exact same post as me. I checked around didn't see anything exactly the same. If so please link me the post. I have a 1994 geo metro, 3 cylinder, manual. Its been running pretty well for the past year. It has over 250 thousand miles on it :D. So I was driving on the freeway a few weeks ago and all of the sudden my car lost some power. Geos don't have a lot of guts anyway but all of the sudden I couldn't get it up past 65 and my speed slowly got worse. So i checked around couldn't figure out what was wrong with it.

Well i took it to a mechanic and it turns out a spark plug cable was lose. He plugged it back in, charged me 80 bucks hahaha. I'm an idiot, I should have checked. Well so a week later the same thing happens. I look under the hood, and low and behold the cable was off. So i bought new ones, replaced them. Then the weirdest thing happened. The car would start, but die if I let it idle. It was like this for a few days. Now it won't start at all. It turns over, and sometimes i can hear it trying to start but I think its not getting fuel. I'm not really sure to be honest. I changed the fuel filter, and yeah it was pretty dirty. It started after i tried for 10m while hitting the gas pedal over and over, i drove it around the block and then it died when i parked it at home while idling. Now it won't start again. Any ideas? you think this is still the spark plugs, or could it be the injector? The fuel Pump sounds like it is coming on when I turn the key.

I really don't want to fork over the dow to replace EVERYTHING on the car to find the problem. I love this car, it saves me so much gas money but right now its sick. So any advice or ideas would be great. Thanks.

Mine would do the same. I checked the wires to the fuel pump under the rear seat. They were all f'd up. After reconnecting them it fires right up. If you can hear your fuel pump coming on but it still wont turnover I would check those out.

are you certain you got the new wires in the right order? its very common to get 2 and 3 backwards.. or something. it is even wrong in some of the manuals...

Pretty sure, I made sure to only do one at a time. And I was able to drive the car 40 miles home from where it had broken down the second time. It ran just fine unless i took my foot off the gas and let it idle. In which case it would begin to run very rough and then die.

The proper plug wire connections:

Suddenly loosing power.

With 250K on the engine I'd suspect a burnt valve, in which case you can do a compression test: How to: compression test. You can rent one. The $80 mechanic would likely not have the pedal mashed to the floor during the test.

It's possible that one of the plugs is fouled. When were they last changed?
How about the distributor? The posts get corroded and worn as does the rotor.

Injector, possible. Here is a test: Fuel Injector Test. and my repost of mwebb's other tests: Injector test. New injectors at: http://www.fuelinjector.citymaker.com/GEO_FUEL_INJECTORS.html

...and yes it could be the catalytic converter.

Good advice from Bad Bent (as usual). I'd do a compression test. It's that time of year, where all the worn out engines that have been limping along all summer suddenly refuse to start in the morning.
