Well guys, my 95 Metro 1.0L has been very reliable and trouble free. I take great care of it because I drive it 190 mi and back twice a month for my job, plus a little driving in between around town. It's got 204K mi. and been running perfect, and not hardly burning any oil even.... So I was pulling up to the drive through at Taco Bell and all of a sudden I'm getting a horrible squeal / grinding sound from under the hood. I turned it off at the window, and got my burrito, then pulled over in the parking lot. I checked the engine oil and belts, and everything looked ok, and I wasn't getting the CEL. I've been working on my own vehicles for 35 years and I've never heard a sound like this. I could feel it vibrating in the shifter (5 spd) too. I hope it's not a spun bearing in the engine! I'm letting it cool down completely and I will go out and start it up and see what it does... I'm away from home now for work and I don't have another vehicle here to fall back on ( I got a bunch of cars at home but none that get 50 mpg!). If anyone has an experience like this I'd love to hear what it was..... |

Throwout bearing possibly? or internal trans issue? Did pressing the clutch affect the noise at all? That's my first guess. Perhaps a short caused the starter to try engaging? |

If the noise is coming from the belt area, remove the belt and spin the components by hand. |

Well, I just went out there and started it up mostly cooled down and the noise is gone. Engine is running perfect, so I'm thinking maybe Boogie Rat could be right about the throw-out bearing. It does sound like there is a bit of a rattle in there when the clutch is out.
