Just because I'm doing a belt/waterpump too....

Start it like this, then use the butt of a hammer handle (or similar) to tap it on.

Snug up the tensioner without the adjustment lock stud, this gives a little more clearance.

thanx for all the tips.My timimg belt installation frustrations in retrospect are due to many unproblematic installations on a 90 vert. I did not expect the different tolerances on a 93 vert. which has the rounded teeth as opposed to the square teeth. Visually my belt looks good even after suspending it over a kerosene heater for 10 minutes and hot enough to require a cooling period so I could work with it. The carbon black in it just won't expand the belt i guess.
Truckjohn, I think your're right. No mather what you try you cannot get it on except for the fact that it was on before I took it off albeit with some effort.
As far as me obusing the timing belt it's because the timing belt abused me for 2-3 hrs.
The verts, all of them, came from the factory with square teeth on the belt. If you have the stamped steel cam sprocket and four bolts on the crank sprocket then it is original and takes the square toothed belt.

If the sprockets have been changed then you should have a five bolt crank sprocket and a spoked steel cam sprocket. That combination takes the round tooth belt. This combination was only found on cars built from May 93 till the end of the 95 model year.

96+ (Any OBDII car came with a wider version of the spoked cam sprocket with the five bolt crank sprocket, also wider, and used a 1" wide round tooth belt.

I had to go one step further and remove the metal tang from the tensioner bracket. That allowed for even more movement and slack.

Yeah, the Gates belts I almost could do that. This is some belt from Rock Auto, forget the brand, went on tight, but not as bad as Gates.
