2000 4/3 159k miles. Just got it off the trailer and noticed a cloud of blue smoke blowing out. Dammit the previous owner says it stops once it warms up; rings or valve stems? I'm purchasing a 1.3 identical to mine from a forum member pretty soon and am going to rebuild it, but I want this motor to last as long as it can. Ideas?

159K and unknown maintenance schedule means bad rings. Pop the top off and drop the bottom. Pony up a couple of hundred bucks and rehab the tired engine. It will make a world of difference and then throw in some top tier motor oil along with a great filter. Then that monster four banger will perform wonderfully for a long time. |

Do I need to rebuild the head or leave as is? If I'm going to rehab, I'll just wait til I've rebuilt the other motor..... |

Is it a continuous cloud, or just on startup? Mine spits a cloud just as it starts, but that's it. And I have 229,500+ miles, still with excellent compression. If it's just at startup, I honestly wouldn't worry about it. If it's doing it all the time, it's probably valve guides or rings. One thing I know about the G13BB for sure is the more you drive it, the more it likes to be driven. Stretch that things legs on the highway at least once a week. My suggestion: Put Chevron Techron in the fuel tank, top off the tank, and take it out to some interstate, and drive the piss out of it for 15-20 miles. Then let it sit overnight, and see what it does in the morning. They're quite a bit more forgiving than the 3's, and don't mind being thrashed on a bit. Don't be afraid to push it. Oh, and change all the fluids. Never trust a P.O. to do maintenance. Unless you know them well. Edited by JADEDSL2, Nov 3 2013, 01:19 PM.

I like that idea!!! I haven't worked on the 1.3's before, it's good to know I can be a little mean to it I'll do just that then. btw, I haven't driven it enough to know if it does it all the time once I get it tagged I'll let you know ![]() EDIT: Agreed on changing the fluids... I'm going to change fluids, spark plugs and filter asap

Just don't be excessively abusive. It's only a 1.3L. But you can be "hard" on it. Change the fluids first. Who knows what's inside from the P.O. Yours may be an automatic, but I've got quite a bit more mileage than you do, and no engine issues to date. I changed my timing belt and water pump/hoses at 226,900 something miles. Water pump was factory original, and I would venture to say the timing belt probably was too. The 16V 4's just last a long time with minimal fuss.

Take the head to a machine shop. They can vacuum check the valves to see if they're sealing adequately. It takes about 2 minutes, or less. |

change all fluids then add tecron or MMO and run it fairly hard for 1K miles and see what happens |
