I put in a JVC KD-R540 over the weekend and it seems to work OK. I have to get used to the controls, but for $99.99 Crutchfield included the mounting kit and wiring harness. I also got 2 pair of el-cheapo Pyle 6-1/2" 3-way speakers (PL63BL) from Amazon. 2 x pair of for $37 with free shipping on orders over $35. I installed a pair in the doors, but haven't got to the set in the back yet. Using stock grilles to keep it "stealth"... not an expensive system by any means, but I don't want to invite anyone to bust into the car either. Before: ![]() This is the dash center opened up. Antenna cable and wiring harness were right there in a car that had never been equipped with a radio.

This is the factory harness shrink-tubed to the radio harness. Pretty painless to put together. I added an extra tail to the ground wire to attach to the chassis, just because...

Here is the unit mounted in the dash. The brackets that came with the mounting kit were too long to fit properly, so I had to bend them... I guess I could have cut them shorter with some tin snips.

Here's everything installed. The factory bezel was slightly too narrow for the faceplate to fit, so I adjusted it a bit with a Dremel-ish tool.

The speakers didn't come with any brackets to mount them directly to the door, so I bent up some scrap metal that I had laying around and attached them to the interior panels. I would probably get better resonance mounting them to the door frame, so if anyone has a pic/link to a bracket that will work please let me know.

I mounted them upside down so the wires would reach. I cut off the stock connectors and crimped on some quick disconnects. If I remount the speakers to the door frame, I'll probably solder the connections but they are OK for now,![]() I'll put up more pics when I install the rear set. ![]() Don't mind the water spots, it's raining. ![]() So on the left is the back of one, you can see they had a little strip of foam attached from the factory, and on the right, the front that you mount the speaker to. |

You can also see the cute little notch they gave you to put the speaker wires into, to plug in to the speaker from the back. And, I think they are upside-down. ![]() I believe the two holes that are closer together go on the bottom. So if you didn't have a stereo from the factory, did you have a delete plate or something? If you did, pics! Edited by Mythstae, Nov 5 2013, 07:08 PM.

No delete plate, just nothing. The wiring is there, but no mounting bracket and the door frame isn't quite flat, so you can't really just screw them in. They are cool for now. Thanks for the pictures; now I know what to look for if I hit the pull-a-part.

If you get those from a yard, you will need to pry the little white things out from under them. If your car came with no sound system (mine didn't, either.) you will need to tear away the plastic door wrap (it's pre-perforated) insert the 4 screw inserts, screw the mount to the door, making sure to put the wire in the notch, and then plug the speaker in and screw the speaker to the mount.

I believe the actual question was about what was where the stereo goes? A pic of the block off plate would be cool or was there just a hole? MMM |

Correct, I meant was there a delete plate in the hole where the stereo goes, not in the locations where the speakers go. |
