hello everyone, i have been having issues with my cigarette lighter and was wondering if anyone can help me out.

so my cigarette lighter hasn't been working. i checked all the fuses and they were all fine, and the radio was working just fine. i have read on the forum that they are hooked up to the same fuse, i also read that some other posts on how they are connected so i went and looked for my self. i also took pictures cause im not sure if i would be able to explain it right, hopefully they help.

this is my cigarette lighter spot, the lighter piece is not in there in this picture

this is a picture of the cigarette lighter from behind where the cables are hooked up to. the green arrows are pointing to a plain black wire. the yellow arrows are pointing to a black wire with a red stripe on it and the red arrow is pointing to the piece that hooks up to the back of the cigarette lighter and is also hooked up to the red and black wire.

its not the clearest picture but this is one of the cables that are hooked up to the back of the cigarette lighter when i unplugged it. the arrows are pointing to the same things. the green is the plain black wire the yellow arrows is the red and black cable and the black arrow is pointing to the piece that was plugged in directly to the back of the cigarette lighter.
i only noticed that that the plain black wire was not plugged up to anything when i unplugged it. i will mention that i have had issues with the cable coming unplugged for a couple of years now and it has always worked after i plugged it back in. i never noticed the black cable, only the red and black wire. maybe somebody out there knows if this is the problem and where the cable is supposed to be hooked up to. (not sure if people can see this one it wont show up when i preview it)

i was also wondering if it were possible to replace that whole piece. i was looking around and i found these
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Custom-Accessories-12V-Lighted-Auto-Lighter/19853339
just in case the link doesn't work, this is a link to what looks like a cigarette lighter replacement from wal-mart that looks pretty cool

http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_lighter-assembly--long-knob-dorman--help_22146434-p?searchTerm=cigarette+lighter+
this is another cigarette lighter replacement from advanced auto parts, they also had a few others
would either of these or anything similar work and if so how would i hook them up?

hope the pictures and explanations make sense, thanks in advanced fellas.

Check to see if you have 12V to the lighter. If so, most cars have a fusible link on the lighter (looks like a little piece of paper clip) and it might be burnt. If you don't have 12V at the lighter then you have a blown fuse or a bad ground.

Sir, yes sir!

To test the lighter with a multimeter you need to set it for DC voltage and put the red probe on the center part at the bottom of the socket and the black probe along the side.

OR, set to continuity (some meters beep as well) and see if the center and outside parts are connected. If so, the lighter is ok. Do this with the cables disconnected.

:ermm: I may be misunderstanding what your saying, but wouldn't that indicate it was shorted?

After re-reading what I posted I may have been misunderstanding what I said!

Put the lighter in the socket (while it is in your hand, not connected to the harness) and check for continuity from one lug to the other. They should be able to see each other. If they do not there is a broken connection (possibly a fusible link). The lighter will have to be in the "heat mode" (pushed in, not popped out).

:D Glad I caught that then.

hey guys, just thought i'd post an update on how everything went. i got it fixed and now it works perfectly. i got a new 12v socket assembly from Pep Boys for $10. it was so easy to install i can't believe i didn't get it fixed sooner. Got more pictures too.

this is the old assembly, i thought it would be cool to take it apart
