I'm a little bit technically inclined, but I'm no auto mechanic. I've spent over $3,500.00 putting my 94 Metro back on the road over the past year and a half... wish I knew how to fix this car myself, but having to rely on mechanics who don't know the first thing about Geo. After having a 1990 engine and transmission dropped in during August of 2012, I have been able to drive this car a total of about 7 weeks since then because it's been one thing after another. But I'm invested, so still at it. I want to be able to drive this car on a daily basis... It's a great little car and I'm the original owner. I have to thank Geo Glenn for pointing me to where to get parts and plenty of advice on how to approach the mechanics that are doing the work for me. But these guys do not do transmissions. I just got the car back from having a new ball joint and catalytic converter done. I drove the car twice, and now the shifter is slipping out of 5th gear into neutral as I'm driving along. It just won't stay. The car is running good, and the gears shift the way they're supposed to, but unless I keep my hand on the stick and hold it in place in 5th gear, it slips out. Is this something that might be an easy fix? Or does this sound like having to rebuild the transmission? I haven't yet called the local mechanic that did the last small job, but he doesn't rebuild anything. I'm 40 miles north of Tampa, FL and I don't know what my first step should be. Any input would be appreciated. Terri |

That should be a fairly easy fix. And, it can be fixed with the transmission in the car. Have you had any transmission or clutch work done lately? Fluid change? Anything? Did the popping out of 5th gear start recently, or has it been happening for a while? |

I had the clutch cable replaced early this year (March?) because it broke. I figure it was rusted from sitting in the driveway for 3 years. When they dropped the engine & tranny in, they would have done the transmission fluid at that time. The popping out of 5th might have happened once or twice around March or April on the highway at night shortly after I got the car back from the rebuild, but it was having other issues that I was focusing on (the oil farting, etc) and with the radio going and the not-so-smooth ride and road noise, I wasn't really sure if it slipped out or not, I just pushed on the shifter to make sure it was in 5th. So that might have been the first sign. But it hasn't happened again since that time, but then again, this car has not spent much time on the road at all. I had driven it at least 2,000 miles without any shift issues after that, so I figured the transmission was fine. It just started the other day after I got the car back from Chip. He did the catalytic converter and a left front control arm/ball joint. I drove it 16 miles to the store up to about 55 mph and it slipped out a couple of times. I drove it again the next day, and it was popping out so often that I had to hold it in place until I got back home. |

Member Norby is listed on the forum as being available as a Geo mechanic. He is about 1 1/2 hours, 80 miles from you in Orlando. PM him and get together with him. http://geometroforum.com/single/?p=473541&t=1644179 Also, 5th gear is an overdrive. You can use 4th to drive to Orlando and not hurt the car. |

Yes, I know about Norby. In September I contacted him bout doing some work and he did respond. I gave him my number and he was going to call me the next day to arrange me bringing the car to him, but then he never called. I messaged him a few times over the next couple of weeks with no response. I checked and he hasn't been on the forum since the last message he sent me on 9/18. Not sure what happened to him. |

You should probably have your mechanic remove the black cover from the end of the transmission and take a look. These images are from Pacapo's collection. The transmission cover. ![]() 5th gear is located directly under the cover. The gears have been removed in this image. The plate must be flat, and all of the screw tight. If the plate is damaged, or the screws are loose, this may be causing your problem. ![]() There could be some other problems. Take pictures. There's no need to drain the transmission fluid. Very little, if any, will leak out. Use Ultra-Gray RTV as a flange sealant when replacing the cover. |

Glenn, mine has been slipping out of second for a long time now unless I keep my hand on the shifter and pull it really hard towards the second-gear location the whole time I'm in second. Typically happens when I accelerate after slowing down in city driving, having put the car in neutral to coast. Once I'm into third I am safe, and there are no issues getting into or staying in first. Could this be due to a damaged plate or loose screw also? I was assuming it was a problem with an aging mount. |

That's going to be a different issue Pete. You should start your own thread for this topic. |

Okay, so I left a message for my mechanic to call me about taking the transmission cover off and checking if anything's loose and he's not calling me back. Guess I will try this myself since I can see it's easily accessible. My 10mm socket wrench doesn't fit in this space. Do I only need a deeper socket? or is there another tool I should be using to get these bolts off? And after that, when I am ready to put the cover back on, do I follow the directions on the back of the Ultra Gray package? or is there anything in particular I need to know about the sealant? |
