Contract Re-bid time, and it looks like the company I work for lost out. Underbid by another. Had our interviews today, as they generally see how many who are already in place want to stay on, cause it's cheaper for them versus hiring/training new from the states. Their offer letter is less than desirable, but in my position, I can't afford to turn it down. The contracts over here in the 'hot zone' have slowly dropped in pay over the last few years. Well, the new pay will drop us from $90k/yr down to $73k. Almost not worth being over here and getting fired upon. Ugh. "Yes" for now, and will look elsewhere. Glad to have employment.
$73K a year, and you're complaining?!

I wish I made half of that! :lol

Salary cap at our crummy call center is $14/hr.

Of course you don't have to live in Afghanistan or be subjected to having people trying to kill you, at least not usually.

Well, congrats? I hate those offers that you can't refuse but you kinda wish you never had. Hope some of that cash is getting earmarked just for you. Sucks to work extra and make sacrifices and not havie anything extra when you get done. Makes it worth it more if you have an extra toy or two when it's all done.

M'kay, I may be taking on a new job soon if all goes well. It'll open up opportunities and also provide more time with the wife.

As some may know, I've been in Afghanistan since February as a contractor mechanic. The contract came up for bid in September, and the company I was with, lost out. The new low-bidder one sucks. They cut our pay considerably, as well as coming in and basically lying to our faces with their talk of many waiting to take our spots if we didn't accept their low offers. I have friends in the states making more and not living in harms way. Some left, but those of us who couldn't afford to walk stayed on, looking for new jobs daily since.

I heard of a job working on Aerospace Ground Equipment (AGE) for the Predators and other drone aircraft. I applied, even though I have no prior experience on AGE equipment. I get contacted by a recruiter saying my resume has exactly what they want. Okay. So, they're starting the security and background checks now. Hopefully I'll get it, as it pays more, plus they work a four month on, four month off schedule. I'd prefer 4 on, and 2 off but if we budget right, the four off is doable. This would give me more time at home, which is nice. Fingers crossed, and more to come...

Training is at Creech AFB in N. Vegas for a month. They have site all over. Basically near the hot spots that need the drones. Here (Afghanistan), Turkey, Germany, Japan, Kuwait. Not sure yet where I'll end up. But, the schedule is nice.

Yep, the UAVs are a hot thing now, and being able to add something new to my resume is always good. The 4 months at home will be a great thing. Provided we budget right and stretch the money to cover things during the down time.

That's awesome, good luck with this job. 4 months home is a lot better than what you have had the past 8 months.
