Well, the end came a lot quicker than expected. The contract expires 31 December, with no renewal, thanks to the company charging too much for services. Originally was told I'd be here in Plattsburgh, NY for 5-6 months (Feb-March). Then told the end of the year. Now looks like we'll be packed up and headed home on the 12th of December. I'm scrambling right now to line up something else. I hope to either get a slot at the local shop in Tucson, or if necessary end up taking a year contract over in Afghanistan. Pay would be a lot more, but there's the always present risk and danger associated with it. The fear of being unemployed again makes me sick. More to come.... |

Been there, done that and got F-ed in the A. Was laid off for a few weeks this summer. Had a contract, everyone said it would be renewed, but I had my doubts. Just keep your resume updated and keep floating it and do not make any long term financial commitments. |

Still waiting to see if a last-minute contract extension gets worked out, or if some of us can be picked up by the new contractor, if any. In the meantime, I knew I had to have a back-up plan, just in case. Contacted my old troop and his boss over in Afghanistan, and told them of my dilemma. Well, today, I get a call from the contractor's HR, and looks like I'm being slotted for a vehicle mechanic position. We'll see if it goes through in the coming days. Not the best scenario, with the risk involved with being in a middle eastern country, but the pay is good, and I need to get paid. More to come. |

Dang! Sounds similar to my dilemma. We have new management and it is lay off time due to budget constraints. I wouldn't be surprised if my department saw some losses. I've started looking already! Good luck, hopefully you find something closer to home and less dangerous. I was glad to see you had a stellar contract. Shame. |

If you get to go to the mid-east, I would suggest to brush up on your hunting skills with a weapon. Never can tell when you might need those reflexes to kick in. Will your contractor be furnishing you with protection? Make darn sure you have a personal weapon close by at all times. Never go anywhere unaccompanied. Never EVER think those folks are your friends. They will be hunting Americans real soon, if the SHTF over there, again. |

Just received a call from HR for DynCorp Int'l in reference to the Afghanistan mechanic job I'm pursuing. They're sending out an acquisition link for me to digitally sign, and they mentioned the word 'approved' and will be sending me an offer letter today. Looks like I may have a job soon. Just in a middle east location away for a year. Gotta go where the money is. Wish me luck. |

Congrats man. Good time to leave your car with evmetro. Won't be any spots on the roof when you get back from the sandbox. Edited by Woodie, Dec 31 2014, 07:43 AM.

I so wish I had an endless budget, and could leave it with him, or Richard... or both! I'd come back to a bad as ride for sure. |

The best jobs are usually landed by having a ''sponsor'' meaning someone is connected to the organization. Large Corporate organizations hire people through a HR structure and then it is up to you to fend for yourself. In every department there are politics. Loners seldom are retained unless they are very good at the job. The only way to stay employed in an unstable job market is to have very marketable skills. What happened to me was I locked myself into a narrow skill set. My career is torpedoed as one advances with age. I can sit at home collecting my pension, not burning gas running to a 4 hour a day minimum wage job. When you reach a certain age and can no longer howl with the youngsters the Job market shrinks incredibly. |

Just got a phone call... my security clearance is complete. Sometime next week I receive my itinerary, to fly out on the 16th for my week of processing at Tyndall AFB, Florida before heading 'over da pond' for my year of turning wrenches in Allah land. This moment I thought would have happened a month ago, and has set me back bill-wise a bit, but I'm glad to finally be seeing that employment light at the end of the tunnel. |
