Broken Shifter!!; It dropped into the floor!

I've seen that one called a rubber spider by others on this forum. It's probably been torn for ages. I have one with almost exactly the same tear pattern. One fix for that is to go to your local friendly McParts store and ask for a tube of polyurethane (not silicone!!) window weld. That's the goop that holds your non-opening windows in place. Clean the parts up with carb cleaner or something equally effective (nothing containing soaps or oils!) Assemble it just like you have it in the first picture and tape up the underside of the spider so the window weld stays where you want it, then fill the spaces in the rubber part of the spider and housing level to the top with it. Let it set for two days, then install it.

Your odds of finding a new one, or even a whole one, aren't the best. I got mine at a jy, and the one in my car is in the same shape.

I dragged John out to the Pick N Pull because they had a 1993 Geo Metro 5 speed that still had the shifter in it. He got it out but it was torn up all over the rubber not much better than mine.

Is there someone on the forum that has one they could sell? I need:

(9) - part #96060293 manual transmission control lever housing

Any one of these you find used will have gone through the same hard life as yours. If you can't fix it, you'll have to find someone who makes new expendable parts for 21-year old oddball cars.

Good luck!!

While at the Pick N Pull, we tried pulling the part from a Metro with a different body style. The part was different, and the rubber was bad so we left it. But thinking about it later on, the way it was different was I think how it held the shift rod. Not sure if anything else was different. That got me thinking, could I just use the other shifter rod? Would the different rod then be a mis-match to other parts of the shifting mechanisms? Has anyone compared them or tried this?

What about substitutions? Is there something I could replace the default shifter with that could still match up or be (creatively or otherwise) paired to the connections under the car?

UPDATE: Got shifter boot part from 1.0smallblock. The provided sleeve was different but it fit with the sleeve from mine. New CV boot, new water pump installed. We ran it about an hour (unrelated heater testing) while the front end was still jacked up. When we finally put it down and level to test the tranny, ignition was harder to start. I began a test drive but the check engine light came on. I turned around at the end of the street and returned.

When I got back, the noise of the engine sounded wrong. My Geo is ODB 1 so John's tester was the wrong fit.

We finally called it quits past midnight. I went home discouraged.

It has other issues too, but those are now on hold until we know the engine and tranny are okay.

Why did it act different on jacks? What could we be missing? Namely, what domino effects could have happened from the shifter dropping?

It would be pretty difficult to prove in court that he left the bolts out intentionally. Poor workmanship yes, but fraud?
All used cars you buy from Craigslist are rebuilt right :rofl

You don't need a "tester" for ODB1. go to this "How To" and read it closely. It will tell you exactly how to "read" your ODB1 system.

Update: John got it working. The engine code was for the speedometer. The speedo cable was affected as a part of the domino effect from when the shifter fell.

It is actually driving torque'ier than before.

Does anyone have video with great quality audio of a g10 engine in tip-top shape running in idle and with stationary throttle? Preferably a newly installed Geo Glenn engine?

John needs a point of reference for what a g10 engine in peak condition should sound like. Un-modified examples only please. No econo-cams, no turbos, only a stock engine.

Thank you.

Edit (11/4/2014): Found a video... Video of newly installed Geo Glenn Engine

Update: Driving as it was prior to shifter breaking. The feeling of extra torque was gone the following day.

The shift boot from Japan arrived Monday. I picked it up from the post office Tuesday. Does that make it a Christmas present?

Sorry for the blurriness in most of the photos. Having some vision issues :(
