I just Bought this 1999 chevy metro 1.0 MT. As you can see im leaking tranny fluid from the bottom of my tranny. It seems someone put a silicone gasket maker when they put the tranny back in. I wanted to change the fluid but im not sure sure. What should i do?

Clean off as much as you can, seriously. You should be able to tell where its coming from. If you feel that you need to add fluid, pull the speedo gear and add a little at a time. You need to identify the leak and fix it before you change the gear oil. Otherwise you're wasting money... |

Looks like it might be the dreaded shifter seal. |

take it to a car wash and pressure wash it so you can see exactly where the leak is. After you find out exactly where the leak is coming from then you can fix it. To fix the leak you will probably have to drain the tranny. THEN you can fill it and that will take care of the oil change.----IN THE MEANTIME----keep your tranny oil topped off. |

And fill it using the fill plug if you can. Over filling a trans can cause pressure inside the unit when the oil temp goes up. When it does it can blow the oil out by the seals.

caution: don't just "add fluid tomorrow". Check it !!!! Too much in there is almost as bad as too little. |

If you can remove your speedometer gear. One ten mm bolt. you can fill through that hole and use the spedo gear for a dip stick. when the fluid coves the gear it is full. |

Look at this pic. black thing on the left is the "hat" on the back of your tranny. Red thing on the bottom right is a plastic plug installed where your axle enters the tranny. the fitting above where the axle goes in is the transaxle oil fill. some take a 3/8 square wrench to fit the square hole, some take a larger (don't remember which size--#17? #22?) wrench to fit the hex. Fill til the fluid starts running out. here is the pic http://geometroforum.com/single/?p=455567&t=4233856 If that don't work for you then pull the speedometer cable housing. The tranny is full when the oil is 1 7/16 inches from the top of the housing hole. As a last resort completely drain the tranny and install 2 1/2 quarts of tranny fluid. |

![]() Well it seems like the fluid is coming from where the axle goes in. Is this the tranny seal? I read somewhere that these are hard to come by fir the 5 speed. Where can i find it? |

Be sure to slide the new seal up on the axle and make sure it fits correctly before you install it only to find out it is not the right seal and leaks again. |
