Something about that reads "more than normal" to me. Like electrolysis or a salt compound to accelerate or enhance the rusting. Whatever it was, replacement will fix it since it will be clean and free of water or anything else that is in that tank.

Ok.... Found a tank at a salvage yard 2 hrs away. Drove there & picked it up. They had already sold the pump tho. Looks like new inside & very nice outside. Might be a replcemennt tank. Just need to find a pump & sender. :banghead

You should make a very specific post in the wanted section for the fuel pump assembly.

Wanted

Fuel pump assembly wanted. Picture of type included.

Forget it, I seen where you have. You might change it to read (fuel pump assembly) though.

If you were in the mood for a South Carolina trip - there are several places around here that sell complete tanks with fuel pump, etc for about $100.... they don't break them up, though....

Kinda like me trying to find the column turn-signal switchy thing... Sure - they will sell me the complete column... but not just the bare switch...

i have something more to add about the problems with rust forming inside the fuel tanks.

these cars are very prone to forming condensate inside the fuel tank. when there is less than a full tank, there is a lot more inside wall to form sweat. the condensate then rolls to the bottom of the tank where it is trapped under fuel.

to decrease the amount of condensation, keep your fuel level as high as you can. i alway completely fill my gas tanks before storing any car for any length of time to cut down on condensation.

this is particularly helpful for cars that are located in high humidity areas or areas where the temperature swings up and down through the vapor pressure break point (or dew point.)

also, be aware that the same thing occurs in hidden cavities or voids in the chassis. under the toe boards between the floor and the bottom of the firewall, the floor stiffening channels on the bottom of the car, the frame horns, and the rocker panel voids - all those places sweat internally and cause rust to form on the inside of the steel chassis, rusting from the inside out.

that's why i am a strong believer in doing an internal spray of rust proofing coatings on the inside of those specific areas of our cars. how many of you have watched a bubble or blister form on a clean rocker panel under good paint until it becomes a hole? that's your car rusting from the inside out. ;)

that's the same thing that happens to the fuel tank. :P
