96 rear bumper needs reattached; body repair

Hi Wise Geo Owners, I'm the original owner of a 96 Geo Metor LSi, hatchback, 4 cyl. Recently I've managed to pull off my rear bumper and need to know how to reattach it without buying a whole new bumper assembly. Right now I have it attached with 2 bungee cords, but not sure how secure that will be over time. The engine is still super, but the body is not so nice to look at anymore, so don't want to spend a lot of money. I'll be taking it to a body shop for the work, as I'm disabled and can't do it myself. Can the bolts just be reinserted? If the holes in the bumper where the bolts go through are torn, can a washer be superglued onto them so the bolt will hold? Just would like to get some ideas to present to the body repair guys. Also is there a free manual online that would show how the original was put together? Thanks so much!

Since you are taking it to a bodyshop I doubt they will do anything except what they see as an approved repair that is in their normal processes. Anything they see as substandard or is a process they are unfamiliar with they are unlikely to be able to provide a warranty on and therefore would be resistant to. More than likely the attachment points on the bumper were ripped out. It is possible to weld plastic bumpers (and other stuff) back together, but the shop would have to be familiar with it. I do plastic welding and have patched several bumpers back together after they were damaged (Aveo bumpers are way too low and the cover panel poorly positioned and built), but it's a close toss up whether it's cheaper to just replace from the JY.

Welcome! :banana

Yes, it *should* just bolt back on; it only uses four nuts to hold on. A body shop is going to charge you an arm and a leg to reattach that bumper. You will find how ever, that this is a MUCH different type of forum. Were abouts are you? I'm SURE that we have a member that is close to you that would do it for MUCH less, maybe even free! :rocker

thanks! I live in Decatur, GA and it would be great if there was someone nearby who could do the labor for me! Years ago, when I was able and had access to the right tools, I'd have done it myself :) Glad to pay some $ and maybe even bake some cookies ;) I just want it safe to drive an average of 2 miles a day.

Is there a special place in the forum to ask the favor from someone local?
Thanks again!

thanks for your reply! Installing a brand new bumper would likely cost more than the car is worth :)

It's not hard at all to reattach the rear bumper. Here are some pics of my rear bumper off to give you a visual: http://geometroforum.com/topic/2926693/20/

Thanks so much! Would it be possible to list the steps you took to reattach it?

There is also a listing for "available mechanics" I don't see any in Georgia but there are some in the neighboring states. Go here and maybe you can get in contact with a mechanic who can come to you or maybe you can go to them even tho they are in another state.

Thanks Oldman! I found this list yesterday, but looked again just now. Also posted in Services Wanted. The 2 closest are over 100 miles away so don't think that's an option. I'm a little worried about just picking from the members' list - you never know who someone really is... But I'll check out a few anyway ;)

I so appreciate all of your help!

100 miles is just a fun outing. get up early, leave at 6. mechanics house at 8, nap on his couch while he works on your car, leave at 4, home at 6. mechanic had 8 hours to fix your car. == good outing. met a true and reliable geo mechanic. made a new friend. well worth the drive

But then out West where I am we drive 100 miles just to meet another member for morning coffee---lots of open air here
