I have a 92 3/5 and the one of the main shaft bearings is going out..have a vibration felt in the clutch pedal, as well as the shift lever..I seem to remember there is a bearing inside the black cover on the rear of the trans..IF that is the bad one..can it be replaced by simply removing the old bearing and putting the new one in ? Worst case..I have another good trans here..but hoping for a quick fix til warmer weather..brief history on the car..this is the second trans, I've put in..car is approaching 700,000 miles...hoping to keep it going a bit longer..thanks...pj

You cant replace bearings without splitting the case. |

Yes..that is correct...700,000 miles..bought it with 212,000 on it and drove 300 miles per day for over 6 years delivering car parts as an independent contractor..still driving to work..just not using it it as a delivery vehicle anymore..I removed the back seat, front passenger seat...went through three sets of tires per year, half a dozen sets of axles to date, and two valve jobs until I installed the stainless steel exhaust valves, and advanced the timing to 12 degrees BTDC...to correct the valve burning problem that these cars have...still getting 50+ mpg at 60 MPH... |

Yes new rings, and a hone job...installed the updated lifters, enlarged the oil return holes in the head gasket,..new valve guide seals, I had a spare head and had it ready to go..we pulled the old head off, and my son pulled the oil pan..pushed the pistons up and out the top..while I de carboned the pistons, he was honing the cylinder..popped the new rings on,..then repeated those steps for the other two pistons..total time from the time we opened the hood til I drove off..a little over four hours..I filled it up and drove it 80 miles at 60 mph to seat the rings..came back and filled it up again..checked the milage..58 at a steady 60mph... |

How many miles before the engine was opened up the first time for rings or valves? |

I've had three of these metros..the 92 I've been driving for over seven years..another 92 3/5 and a 94 auto I got rom the same owner..used the 92 as a parts car..thats where the spare trans came from..W e rebilut the 94 engine as we did the the 92...it had the usual auto trans problem of not shifting automatically..had to shifty it by hand...but ran fine...I used it on my oarts route for a short time...gas mileage was mid 30's..and the engine seemed to really be turning rpm's over 60mph...was a good around town car... |
