My 5-speed ('93 XFi with a rebuilt tranny from Geo Glenn's man in St. Louis) has been slipping out of second for a long time now unless I keep my hand on the shifter and pull it really hard towards the second-gear location the whole time I'm in second. Typically happens when I accelerate after slowing down in city driving, having put the car in neutral to coast. Once I'm into third I am safe, and there are no issues getting into or staying in first. Could this be due to a damaged plate or loose screw, like the other fellow's that is slipping out of 5th? I was assuming it was a problem with an aging mount. |

From the looks of this thread http://geometroforum.com/topic/5012801/5/ the transmission shop dropped the ball on the rebuild. The problem started immediately after you installed it, it appears to me. Also what did you ever find that was leaking in that thread? |

If I remember correctly, the leak was due to the valve cover needing to be tightened up a bit. I tightened it per Geo Glenn's instructions...no more leak. Does anyone think a worn engine mount could account for the 2nd gear problem? I hesitate to blame anyone or anything connected with Geo Glenn, no matter how remotely. |

Everyone is capable of making a mistake. Call Geo Glenn, tell him the problems. Have him call the tranny guy. Tell him the problems and how long it has been going on. Ask if there is a warrenty or if he will fix it for you. People cant fix their mistakes if they don't know about them. |

Or getting a bad part. 2nd gear syncro could have had a weak spot and broke or something similar. |

He needs a new low speed hub and second gear. The rebuilder missed it. I have done my share of warranty work on these transmissins. shit happens. |

Thank you, David. The rebuilder did not miss it. Corky has been repairing manual transmissions for over 50 years. The transmission was operating without the reported problem when it was installed. I drove it, as well as Ironman752. This is a a failure that happened in service many months after installation. Corky puts a 30 day warranty on his repairs. This problem can be fixed by replacing the low speed synchro hub and 2nd gear, as David95752 stated. The 2nd gear synchro is most likely still in good condition. This problem has nothing to do with the 5th gear plate screws being loose. |

No. Syncros do not hold a unit in gear. Ever.

So the idea of a tired, sagging engine mount is just not a possibility? I definitely have to get the tranny taken apart to fix this? |

Sagging engine mounts are not the problem. If it pops out of 2nd, the transmission needs to come out of the car and be disassembled to repair. The good news is that parts are available, and, they all go on the countershaft. The bad news is that the parts are going to cost a little less than $300 from GM or Suzuki. |

Not that it matters to me but I am just curious. Was this a freshly built transmission and never run since it was built until it was put into this car? I only made the observation that in Dec he reported the problem and it appears it had been having trouble even before then but the transmission was put in on Sept. That is 4 months. If this observation is correct. http://geometroforum.com/single/?p=723544&t=5012801 Just curious from any transmission rebuilders by trade on the forum, what kind of warranty does your shop usually give on a standard transmission overhaul? 30 days as was the case in this situation does not seem like much. It is better than nothing but junkyards usually give you 30 days on junkers that have no history of nothing. I really have no clue what kind of warranties transmission rebuilders usually carry on manual transmissions at reputable shops. That is why I ask. I have had a lot of automatic trans rebuilt and I know their warranties were longer but I have never had to have a manual rebuilt so I have no clue. |

Yes, my understanding is that it was freshly rebuilt by Geo Glenn's man Corky and was never run until Glenn installed it in my car. |

Second question would be, how long after it was installed did you start having a issue with second gear? With only a 30 day warranty, you would not have had long to report it. Lesson here is, always understand the warranty and always get your warranty information in writing and make sure your unit is operating correctly during that period or report it. Sorry for your troubles. |

The clutch that I put on the flywheel when the engine was installed was in good condition. It didn't last very long. I'm not surprised the transmission is having problems at the moment. |

New engine- check, new transmission- check. Used clutch. Just saying. Why would you not install a new clutch and pressure plate since your already replacing everything else? Is this not the perfect time? New engine, new transmission, new clutch and pressure plate. Car should be ready to drive a long long long time!
