I really don't think a new clutch would have lasted any longer. A transmission with all new parts would cost somewhere around $1,800 or more. It may not last any longer, either. I had over 85,000 miles on the clutch in my '96 4/5 when I removed it to replace the rear crankshaft seal. You could still see the ink printed "Valeo" on the lining. Ironman752, with just a little over 100,000 miles original clutch disk was worn to the rivets, and the flywheel needed to be resurfaced. It just depends on how and where you drive. I have never needed to replace a clutch. Ever. |

Any car that has been driven long enough to wear out a engine and transmission has got to display dry noisy throwout bearing, clutch and pressure plate wear! Even the best of clutch drivers cannot get away from normal wear. I personally, as for vehicles I drive have never had to install a clutch either but under the above situations I usually replace the componets at that time whether functioning or not.

The clutch that went in with the engine was not the original. It was fairly fresh. I can't remember, but he might have had it installed. Geo Pete kills clutches. His transmission had a 2nd gear synchro that was bad. This transmission was a 4.39. It was not the original transmission. A 3.79 was installed. It was in good condition. It got killed. |

OK, before things get too heated I will just give a best-of-my-recollection history of the car and the relevant issues. I thought I, at least, went out of my way to make it clear I have complete faith in Geo Glenn's work and his judgment! (Others not so much.) Here goes: 2/08: bought car with approx. 72,000 miles on it and with the 4.39 (not original) tranny already in it; no shifting or clutch issues 2/11: clutch cable broke or slipped off while driving in town; cable repaired (clutch not replaced); odometer at 147,099 7/12: intermittent difficulty shifting into 1st and 2nd gets worse due to worn synchros, prompting request to Glenn to replace tranny along with engine 9/12: new Geo Glenn engine and rebuilt 3.79 tranny installed by Geo Glenn (odometer at about 179,000 miles); clutch in good shape (per Glenn) 12/3/12: reported clutch slipping on forum, began adjusting clutch in futile attempt to fix it that way, putting extra stress on synchros for approximately 2 ½ weeks 12/16/12: reported “increasingly” having the problem of tranny slipping out of 2nd on upshifts 12/20/12: new clutch & flywheel installed; mechanic reports “that although the clutch was not in such terrible shape, there was a lot of goop—grease and crud—in the pilot/throwout bearing”; new clutch fixed slipping but did not fix 2nd gear problem So it appears I drove the car from about 72,000 miles to about 179,000 miles—over 100,000 miles—from early 2008 till the early fall of 2012 without doing much that was bad to the clutch, apart from having the clutch cable slip out or break. Not sure Glenn's comment "Geo Pete kills clutches" is fair! I plead guilty to whatever messes up synchros beyond normal wear and tear, since that definitely did occur on my watch. For total fairness, I will note that Glenn told me the 3.79 tranny he installed (it belonged to him, I believe) was rebuilt by his friend in Kansas City because it needed a 2nd gear synchro. But if to 2 1/2 weeks of driving around with a severely slipping clutch (due maybe to the grease and crud my mechanic found in the pilot/throwout bearing?) you add 1 year of intermittent gear grinding when I did not manage to grip the shifter & pull on it hard enough as I was upshifting into 2nd to keep it from slipping out, what do you get? That's the question that needs answering now. No need for finger-pointing, I think. Thanks, Pete |

I don't know which parts Geo Glenn is referring too, but I'd guess a new 2nd Gear, Slider & Synchro. Try here when you find out what you need. http://transpartswarehouse.com/ or check abay. COMPLETE rebuild kits are available for around $300 The 86-88 MK1 Suzuki 5 Speeds in the Chevy Sprint/Suzuki Swift TURBOs were notorious for Popping out of FIRST Gear after about 125,000 miles. Trust me. I know.
