I need a ladder rack on my metro for work and I'm trying to think of what would work best and how I could attach it. I have a few Yakima racks that secure to the upper doot seal but I'm not sure if they'll fit yet. I seen the jeep cherokee rack mod but I just worry it wouldn't be strong enough. Not that the ladder is heavy it's only 40 lbs but it's 12' long. As soon as I come up with a rack that will work my second problem is coming up with a way to secure it to the rack with some sort of quick release seeing as I'll be taking it on and off 15-20+ times a day.

Any ideas are welcome I'm just trying to get some brain storming going on here. I'll be taking off for Christmas and going home so I hope to get it done in that time before I come back to the job site a 1000 miles away from home :die

I would be looking for a way to bring two legs up from the front bumper with a cross member. If that could happen then I would look for a way to "slide the ladder into a 'loose' mount" just forward of the hatch. This way you could have access to open the hatch with the ladder in place. also you could stand in front of the car, release a clamp and remove the ladder, (or load the ladder).

What about just going with one of the collapsible type ladders?

I have the 13' and the 22' model, and I love them.

The collapsible ladder is over 50% heavier a foot shorter and doesn't have line hooks :(

I actually have some Yakima rook racks lying around so I'm just going to use those as soon as I get a PM back for what # Q clips I will need. Now I need to think of an easy attachment method for the ladder :hmm

I have an idea but not really sure what hardware to use.
I'm thinking I'll have the ladder setup to where it's predominantly on the passenger side.

Here's a crusty looking depiction of a 90° piece of what could be angle iron or some sort of metal the same height as the ladder that way you can slide the ladder under the angle and not need to secure that side only the side closest to the passenger door. I'm just not sure what to use to secure the angle to the rack or a type of clamp to secure the ladder on the oposite side.

Suggestions?

make two pieces like the one you have circled. place them facing each other an inch wider than the ladder. Place this set up in the front. forget about the one that says Yakima. instead get another piece like you have pictured. on it mount a 2 ft long bar 90 degrees to the cross member. make two more of the pieces you have circled. mount one on the 2 ft bar permanately. make the other slide on the bar. on the one that slides install a "knob tightener downer".

This way you can stand at the back of the car slide the front of the ladder thru the front (circled pieces) facing each other to secure the front (left to right and up and down)
Then you can push a step against the fixed piece in the back and slide the movable piece against the next step and lock it down.
Quick and easy and only one movable part.
