Someone posted that yes you can, I think it was using an extension, swivel and a socket through the 3 bolt blankoff port. |

Is the bolt head facing the 3 bolt port hole? I've never been inside a transmission to know and can't find a picture of it. I don't see it in my service manuals either. |

Thanks Big Rhino. No obstructions? How hard will it be to keep the bolt in the socket so it doesn't drop out into the case? Just trying to think ahead. And how do I get it threaded back in, now that I'm thinking ahead? Edited by georandy, Dec 23 2013, 11:57 PM.

I dropped mine but fished it out with a stick magnet. Mine was sitting on the bench though.

I'd planned on doing that with the ball and spring that go in the middle of the shift shaft to get them out (before pulling out the shift shaft.) Maybe I could use chewing gum to get it threaded back in being careful not to cross thread it. I do have a little pill magnet that I could put into the socket (maybe) what size is the bolt head? I use piece of electrical tape over the socket to hold the bolt in the socket. |

A little bee's wax in the socket works to hold the it or bolt...works best if but is not oiley. |

Thanks David95237. I may try that. Beeswax is a great idea Rondawg. Yes, 1.0smallblock, but with the transmission still in the car if I can. I had seen that thread before but couldn't find it again now that I have the leak. Thanks for posting the link. If I can't do it with the trans. in the car, I'm going to put it on my trailer and get some help. |

To hold onto bolts that need to be started in a down ward position, I use just a bit of axle grease inside the socket head. It provides just enough friction so the bolt won't drop off. And it won't contaminate your trans fluid. |

Well after getting the bolt loose, I never could get the shaft to line up to get the bolt threaded back on. Trying to line them up was like trying to fetch minnows swimming in corn oil. I guess I could waited a couple of weeks for the transmission fluid to all drip out and clean in there with carb cleaner in order to manipulate the parts without them being so slippery, but with Geogonfa's help it took less time to drop the transmission. His recommendation that we should look at the clutch was spot on. It was fried (although it seemed to be working like new). He showed me how to drop the transmission and install a new clutch. We did, of course, replace the shift shaft seal. I still think a shift shaft seal and boot can be replaced without dropping the transmission or a mod be made at the shift shaft to make it really easy. Next time. |
