Best all around tool.....vise-grip brand pliers small ones, if not that a small cresant wrench. Use these on alot of stuff.

I do like air tools, esp. my cut off disk, and a welder is handy, and I use my cordless small impact alot instead of my air impact as I can take it to PnP. Gear wrench tools are nice. I have made some tools to get the job done.

Grr

if I decide what is my best tool by the tool that I used the most often and that helps me the most. well this is going to sound odd.

my cell phone.

I can take pictures of what I am doing. show pictures to others. ask for help with it. watch how to video's with it. look up problems with it. take video with it.

without question the one tool I use almost every single time I have to fix anything is my cell phone.

the ability to take pictures and video and "network access" is the key.

:rocker

I have these adjustable wrenches that lock like locking pliers (vice grips). It is the best of both worlds. Found it in the truck I bought and don't know how I survived without it.

Cool thread! :thumb

Tough call on just picking one! :lol I guess my SK 3/8" swivel ratchet. If sets are allowed, I would say it's a draw between the metric Gearwrench set and the Gearwrench 1/4" drive set. This stuff gets used just about every time I work on anything!

About all my tools are harbor freight. I gave away all the snap on, mac, craftsman, napa, crap tools I had. :whistle

I love my 5 drawl red tool box, 2 ton floor jack, sock organizer, wrench organizer, ten dollar angle grinder and multi colored sockets. :cheers

Just adding one besides my mind and thinking process...I rebuild a lot of engines and find this tool to be a great time saver as well as easy to use...

Amen!!! It made changing out a full set of old springs for new ones a half hour job! Only reason it took so long was that I was trying to figure out my technique!!

I was thinking about this thread this week while I was screwing around in the shop (smoothing out the trigger group on my new AK-47). After some careful thought I now believe the best tools I have are my digital camera and laptop. I use the camera to take pictures of stuff I am taking apart so I know how to put them back together (a big problem for me) and the laptop for logging on to youtube or car/gun forums for research. I don't know how people got along without them in the past.

EXAMPLE:

When I rebuilt the Metro engine I had never done anything like that before. I took a couple hundred pictures of everything (wiring harnesses, length of bolts and where they were on the engine, etc). I also searched the hell out of GMF for info on the rebuild. I could not have done it without those two tools...

I took pictures of the intake plumbing before I took it apart when I pulled my engine, and I was sure glad I did!! These digital cameras are great!! Ever so much more convenient than the old 4x5 Speed Graphics I used in college!

OK, this might seem funny, but my absolute best tool I've ever had is my old Craftsman phillips screwdriver with a yellow handle and red on the end, hands down. I think it was originally my Dad's and I somehow got it when I left home (I'm 48). It is without a doubt the best screwdriver I have ever used, nothing compares, I don't know why. And I have lots of other screwdrivers. I've used it more than any other tool I own.

I tend to be a little lazy about putting my tools away, so I have lost/misplaced the thing probably a dozen times over the years. When something comes up and I need a phillips screwdriver, I immediately picture it in my mind and hope I can find it! I have this weird drive that I have to find THAT screwdriver to do this job. There's a bit of elation when I open the drawer and it's there. There's also a bit of sadness/frustration if I can't find it and have to use a different one.

The simple things, I guess.
