Don't know about it being my best tool but by far the best small air compressor I've owned is my Q Industries MV50:

I bought it for my Isuzu but I carry it in the Metro. I got tired of buying the little cheapo compressors at places like Walmart and the auto parts stores. It's a bit more expensive but it's likely the last compressor for my tires I'll ever have to buy. It'll air up a 16 inch tire in like 3-4 minutes without getting too hot. It handles the 13's on the Metro real easily. It's all metal, weighs about 2-3 lbs. Notice it hooks up directly to the battery so no worries about blowing fuses.

The customer support is phenomenal too. I recently broke a fitting and the replacements they sent didn't fit so they're sending a new head, no questions asked and this about 3-4 years after I bought it. I can't recommend them enough. :thumb

Have you tried Viair pumps?

No, but I haven't heard anything bad about them. When I was looking it was hard to figure out what the heck I needed.

I belong to an Isuzu forum, kind of like the Geo Metro of the offroad world.. ^o)

There's a couple of fellows in this thread whose opinion I respect and I based my original decision off their experience:

I wanted quality and cheaposity over speed since I don't air down my tires all that much. I paid ~$45 for mine a couple of years ago and I couldn't believe how they were just going to send a new head, no cost, no questions etc. I didn't even ask for it. I don't know if Viair would do that or not. I just know that the way I have to fight to get my wheels off, I'd hate to be by the side of the road trying to change a flat. It's easier to just check and air up if needed and I wanted a compressor that I could count on. The only reason I broke the fitting was because I dropped it. Other than that, it's been very reliable.
