Today as I was on the way home I was cruising along and as I attempted to shift into 5th. I noticed the clutch felt really tight all of a sudden and it would not go into gear. As I began to slow down to prepare to pull off the road I got it into 4th so I proceeded to try and make it home. As I slowed down as I got into town I was able to get it into 2nd.I was able to take a back street and roll though 2 stop signs and timed one stop light just right and finally I made it home. I don't know much about clutches but I'm guessing it went out. While I was home when I would crank it up in gear with the clutch in it would try to take off. Is this classic clutch gone bad or maybe something else. I did check the cable and it looked tight and the adjustment screw did not look like it had moved. Thanks |

sounds like the classic "spring in the clutch pressure plate" came loose. |

I'm not sure what this exactly means. But I had a clutch spring come completely out of a clutch before. It felt like pressing on a box of screws with the clutch pedal. It was hard and felt like I was crushing something. But, before you replace the clutch. Unhook the clutch cable and press on the pedal. It should move freely. If not, it's probably clutch related. Note: I know nothing about Geos. I just hope this advice carries over from other makes and models. |

It only got hard about 1/2 the way down, but it did not feel like I was crushing anything. |

I called around last night most clutch set are $117.00 -$123.00 locally . I see some online for around $75.00-$85.00 with free shipping. I wonder how good these online ones are.

Sounds like the clutch lost a spring to me also...the clutch disc has four tension springs in it, and after a long while they wear themselves loose, usually right before the clutch disc rivets eat metal... |

Yup! Probably lost a spring. It will continue to work for awhile, but it will get worse with time. I would order one online. OEM spec. I get mine from JCwhitney, or at least I have for a couple of cars in the past. $75 sounds about right to me. When you drop the trans there will probably be a ton of dust from the clutch pad wearing so fast since there is a spring jumbling around in there. I'll dig up some photos of my bug when I replaced a very worn clutch. |

No it will not work at all. The clutch will not engage at all after this happened. |

I had been hearing some very slight rattling sometimes. Maybe it was a spring in there rattling around. |

It seems to be a common weak part in the Metros. The slight rattling was your warning something is about to happen. Its a pretty easy fix. I run good clutches in my cars. Make sure it comes with a pilot bearing. |

Definitely. It's a piece that will wear out as time goes on. Definitely worth replacing while you are in there. I usually replace the pilot bearing, clutch disc and pressure plate at the same time. Most kits will come with all 3 pieces. |

Now I fell better. I was afraid the rattle might have been in the engine. I though I would drive it until something broke. Well here we are now. I'm glad it was only a clutch. |

A good clutch kit includes the pressure plate, clutch disc, pilot bearing AND the throw out bearing. Kit should be around $80 |

When the trans is out, change the fluid in it, and install a new set of axle seals in the trans. If you can. |
