Can someone tell me if I remove the piece of naugahyde that holds the rag top in place while down, at the same time acting a as shelid/protector of the clear plastic rear window, will the top unit just go lower and lower into the body? Or does the top cloth and mechanisom have some means to limit its downward travel?

Maybe GeoJoker knows, since I presume he is sleeping through this space.

the top travel is limited because of the part of the vinyl attached to the rear support, the cover also acts as a sound barrier...
here is some good reading on how to protect the rear plastic window:

So if I understand correctly, the tops downward movement is stopped the rear part of the top's attachment to the rear of the car? So in a perfect world the top, particularly the plastic window, should be hanging just above, but not touching , the naughahyde hanger?

Sounds reasonable...but the cloth keeps anything from scratching the inside part of the window as well as offering a noise barrier, and the curtain part is supposed to reduce the air flow into the trunk area...
