Transmission Noises

Looks like I have to rethink my first impressions.
1990 Metro LSi 5 Speed. 205,000 miles. One recent 1600 mile trip. Towed on Front Wheel Dolly then driven home. No hint of a problem. Let it set for two months while I drove the Beater.

Now, I have an intermittent "Whirring" sound. Not quite a "Squeal" from some complaining part.
Starts in 1st, changes a bit at 2nd & 3rd but goes away in 4th & 5th. Sometimes a quick Double Clutch just out & back in to 2nd or 3rd will stop it.

I'm thinking a Bearing on the Low Gear end of the Counter Shaft.

ARRGG! just checked and it's been 2000 mile since I checked my leaky transmission.
Hopefully it won't take a "Double Shot" of Synchromesh Love to not only QUIET the squeal but cure it. At least for now.

Any OTHER Ideas?

I know this may sound strange but are you sure its the trans. My alternator makes a squeal/chirping like noise when the belt gets loose. it sounds just like what you described. It is worse in low gears and stops when I push in the clutch, because it takes the strain off the engine. It usually does not do it in 4th-5th gears. It also is worse when I am running anything using electrical power like lights heater and radio. Sometimes it is not as bad as we think.

The belt is tight, but I have a very small oil leak at the valve cover, so I'll check to see if an occasional drop of oil is reaching the belt. That would explain the intermittent happening of this event. I'll shoot the alternator shaft it with some PB Blaster and see if it stops.

UPDATE: It's not low on oil. It was sitting at about a 10 degree downhill angle the last time I filled it, so if anything it's over-filled and the leak isn't as bad as it looks. That's the "good" news.

The "bad" news. Whatever the noise is, it only happens when the car is moving, in 1st, 2nd & 3rd Gears, but not every time. I can push in the clutch or put it in Neutral and rev the engine and no noise.

At this point, I'm betting it's a Counter Shaft Bearing. The Question is which end. But that's a moot point. When it breaks, I'll refurb all the Bearings and anything else it needs, rather than gamble on a used one.

UPDATE # 2: What little bit of Synchromesh that poured out when I pulled the fill plug was just enough to STOP whatever was squealing. I drove it 75 miles tonight and not a peep out of it.

Anybody got any ideas on why the Over-fill made something Squeal?
