Hi guys, newb here. Been lurking in the shadows for about a year. Lots of good info here!! I have a 97 3/5 that I use as a delivery vehicle. Put a lot into it recently, new front end, tires, clutch, alt, battery, and some other stuff. Soooo, my starter recently went out. Made a faint click, tried to pop the clutch but the street was too slick. Did bump the engine enough so the starter worked. This is when the gauges first started acting up. So, changed the starter and a few toasty looking ground straps with some 8ga. Fires right up now but.......... The fuel gauge remains pegged past full no matter what. At idle, the tachometer and temp gauge seem to operate normally. The tachometer will also operate if you rev the engine in neutral while stopped. Now, shortly after starting to accelerate (about 1500rpm) the tach drops to 0 and the temp gauge rises to about 3/4. Then at about 2750rpms the tach will jerk up to the 2 and bounce around there, and the temp gauge pegs past H. Weird enough right? Now as soon as the front wheels stop moving (literally) all the electric gauges twitch then operate as they should (except fuel) . I have also noticed that while coasting in neutral the engine is running a little fast. My best guess is about 1100rpms. I do have an fsm and a basic understanding of diagrams/schematics. Just not really sure where to look or what exactly id be looking for! Thanks in advance Alex |

Clean the battery cables grounding points. clean all the other grounding points you can find. clean the spade connector that connects the solenoid to the starter. Check the grounds that connect under the TBI. clean any other gounding points you can find. |

Ok, sorry its been a bit, had some more pressing repairs to make! I have cleaned the grounds from the battery to body and transmission, the ground at the solenoid and on the firewall coming from a harness. And i also replaced the ground running from near the dist. to the firewall. I could not, however, find anything attaching directly to the throttle body. where would the other end be? Plan on pulling the cluster this wednesday, besides cleaning is there anything I should be looking for back there? Thanks again!!! |

Well there was something there once upon a time! I have about 4 wires grounded to the firewall in that area, they come the same harness as the iac (i think) and the sensor in the air cleaner. Gonna switch em and see if that helps, Thanks again!!!!! |
