Are you missing one of your alignment sleves? Kinda looks like one.

Not sure. Are they on the input shaft or where? Is there more than one?

Theri is 4 bolts that bolt the trans to the motor 2 of them have alignment sleves, and the starter has two.

you can use an Aveo flywheel holder tool, DT-47562, to fix the flywheel in place to remove the bolts if you don't have an impact driver. The Aveo tool is the same as the one for the Geo, but they're cheaper, for some reason. This is what I just did.

Here's one for $11.97: http://www.ebay.com/itm/280530351897

Nice Work David. I just did a quick check and only see 3 alignment sleeves so I think you're right.

Thanks for tip on the flywheel tool BBowens

just to be sure, the TO bearing doesn't have anything securing it to the clutch fork on the bottom right? It just kind of rests on that shoulder while the top has the slot?

Correct, Make sure you get another sleeve before you put it back in, or you will wear the pilot bearing out.

uh oh, really? I don't understand why it wouldn't be fine once it's all bolted up. Surely it couldn't move around. I'm thinking they might be hard to find. Too bad my step dad gave away the spare engine and transmission I left in his airplane hanger

grrr, why can't I get the starter bolted back on? I don't remember it being a problem in the past but now I'm having big problems getting it in line for the two bolts. I must have done something wrong.

nevermind, I got it, that took about 3 hours longer than it should have

It is an alignment dowel. It must be in there! There should be 2 for the bell housing, and 2 for the starter.

sorry, no one responded in time to convince me that I needed it and that doesn't seem like a part that would be easy to track down so I bolted the transmission back up with only 3 alignment dowels. The car ran fine for 2 1/2 years with only 3 of them, until the 4th (that was somehow in the bell housing got caught behind the TO bearing.

Guess I'll be the case study in what happens when you only have 3 alignment dowels instead of 4

Did you have a shim between the starter and trans? You might have it flipped... It only goes on one way

yeah, I have a shim, I let it rest on the alignment dowels first but did have to flip it around to get it on the right way. I think the wires to the starter were giving me too much resistance, but I got it sorted out. It's on snuggly now
