Last night I took my new basket case project (97 LSI 1.3 auto) on an hour long road test to make sure it is safe to start driving. I commute about an hour each way. I did a couple of real hard panic stops to make sure the brakes were solid and was driving it kinda hard. Got back to the house and had tranmission fluid all over the radiator and the trans dipstick was sticking up out of the tube about a inch or two. I'm guessing it happened while I was doing the panic stops. (Its making me wish I'd held out for a stick) Is this common?? What did you do about it. |

Over filled ATF is my guess. That's usually what happens when there is too much fluid in the trans. It says it right in the manual. It also states that it can cause fires, so be careful. |

Auto trans units can build up air pressure inside the unit if its to full of fluid. Make sure to check it with the car running and in P. |

If you need more help with checking the trans fluid, I can post photos of my owners manual that details it. |

If you built up that much pressure you're trans vent is clogged and you probably have (or will have) some leaking seals. The vent is on top of the trans, behind the bell housing. Some models there's a tube that clamps to the upper radiator hose. Other models there's just a small breather pressed into the case. |

Just checked it and it was a quart and a half low. Which makes sense because I thought It slipped some after I did the panic stops. I really don't think it puked that much last night so it was probably alittle low to start with. I'm considering using a piece of wire and a hose clamp around the tube to lock the dipstick down. I can diffinetly see how this could cause a fire. It's got the breather on the trans and no wet fluid around it. I'll have to look at it closer when the weather clears.
