New Clutch; What should it feel like.

I just had a new clutch kit installed in my 94. I noticed that the clutch lets out towards the bottom of the petal travel. It is also very very easy to push the petal. I was wondering if this sounded correct or did it need to be adjusted .

You need to adjust the clutch till it has about 1/2'' to 3/4'' free play in the clutch pedal. I've put in lots of different clutches and some push in like there's nothing there but they work good.

I can push one of my metros clutches in so easy it is not funny (no resistance) and one takes a act of congress to press! If it is a new pressure plate and easy to push then you should be happy! Get the adjustment right on the pedal height as suggested.

the clutch operating lever has a lot to do with the pedal pressure. a change of just one spline on the shaft really makes a difference in pedal pressure.

the new clutch i installed in my red vert has next to no pressure involved but the new clutch i installed in my white gt takes a hell of a "leg" to push down - same clutch kit in both cars with completely different "feel."

the lever position determines the knee point of the clutch actuation. other than that, cable lubrication and condition can be the only other factors.

Yeah I was curious if the cable was part of why mine is so stiff. Last week I removed it from the lever and the cable was free as a bird. Have not considered the lever. If it were the lever position then would the clutch get easier after passing a certain position when depressing? Mine is stiff all the way to the floor.

the only other difference, which i forgot about, is that the easy clutch on my red vert uses a later model cast lever arm that mysthae picked up for me. the gt has the folded flat/ welded up clutch lever.

i've never noticed a time where the clutch started out in it's travel being hard and then got easier as the pedal went down. they are either hard or easy.

The throwout arm bushings in the housing of the transmission, below where that arm mounts are prone to drying out and making the clutch operation hard. You can't do anything about the bottom one without taking the tranny out, but if you just glom some oil on the shaft where the arm bolts on, it will seep into the upper bushing and free it up. Maybe that's the reason for the leaky distributors, my '98 had no distributor, so the clutch got sticky.

Now that makes sense. There is a seal under the arm I believe. I may remove the arm and seal and see if I can get some slick stuff under there. A couple of external grease fittings would have been nice.

I'm totally awesome! I swear.

"New Clutch; What should it feel like."

Have you seen the movie, American Pie?

Put your foot in it. If the pressure plate feels nice and tight, but will allow your friction disc to slip when you want it to, so you can plunge into your next upshift...

*happiness is a tight pressure plate*
