Hello all, long time lurker first time poster lol. I have a 1994 Geo Metro 4 door 5 speed (3cylinder) that I purchased rather cheaply, alas after welding the body and doing all the brakes and wheel bearings, I was not pleased with what I had to spend, being a young man with limited finances. 213k miles is allooot lol. Anyway to cut the long windedness, here is my current project. I followed Johnny Mullet's pinned clutch guide which was a great help, though I have little mechanical experience I was able to deduce what I had to do based on his instructions. The car gets very little power uphill and I lose alot of speed. The clutch burned out on my father trying to unbeach himself from a 4 foot snowdrift. I decided I needed to replace the clutch, and at some point buy the TBI gasket kit from Napa, which may help the engine power issues considering it probably hasn't been cleaned in years. A decent hot oil change is also on the list as soon as I can afford the filter and oil. On to my original topic though.. After cheating the axle off the wheel (I removed the CV joint in it's entirety) due to a lack of many tools, I finally got to drain the trans fluid. Instead of 3 quarts like I expected, I got almost a pint of burned almost sludge fluid and metal shavings out. Being tired from my hours of fiddling with the axle I decided to call it a night. Is my transmission toast? It still drives with the aforementioned bad clutch, but shifting is a nightmare. Also what I found to not be clear in the guide was what to do with the braid of wires attached to the transmission housing? I can attach pictures if needed. Thanks in advance |

Pics would be good .your tranny shifted into all gears before the clutch went? if not check the for sale wanted here on the forum or post a wanted here....for any tranny that shifts .... go for a 1995 or newer tranny from a 3 cylinder for power or a 1989 to 1994 or for mpg and add 13 inch wheels.

Yeah. I could drive on flat ground up to about 75mph. First requires me to come to a complete stop to drop to it... I don't know if that's normal. |

Crazy question. When you say you only got a pint, was that through the axle hole or through the drain plug? I ask cuz you say you got the pint after you removed the axle. A pint through the axle hole sounds about right. I did that once. |

The distributor has a o ring that needs to be replaced to stop that oil from dripping on the tranny. its a 50cent item ace hardware or other. bring the old one in and match it up ..the rusted bracket is found at any salvage yard a 3 dollar item held in place with two 10mm bolts and zip TY the stuff back on the new one. when you replace the fluid go with penzoil syncromesh from autozone or napa etc. takes 2 quartz or so of this fluid. |

The problem I have is removing the bracket... Just remove the bolts right? As for the o-ring is there a guide for that? The guide said I need 3 quarts of the Synchromesh, do I only need two? What would be the best way to remove the axle? everything is apart right now because it's in progress of replacing the clutch lol. Sorry for the multi question post.. |

I appreciate the help. I have multiple safety precautions set up... I love my car but I won't die for it haha! The rust is my main concern as far as shaking my car to pieces.

Transmission holds 2.5qts of oil, hence 3 qts you have to buy. You might just use 10W30 oil as a flush first though since you say it's really gunky inside. Drive it for a while then drain and fill with the good stuff. If your dad burned up the clutch, the flywheel might need to be resurfaced. Edited by JellyBeanDriver, Jan 14 2014, 01:02 AM.
