Sir Metrologist

Just synchromesh. It only comes in one weight.

Syncromesh for the win.

My Metros trans now shifts so smooth it makes butter wish it was that buttery.

Synchromesh has worked wonderfully for me the last 12 years in both my Metros and Tracker. It's a little pricey, but its guuuuuuuuuuuuuuud.

Thankfully the Metro doesn't have a front diff, rear diff, transfer case, and transmission to fill like the Tracker had. :die

Glenn has mentioned using "regular" synthetic oil, but you would have to check with him on specifics for weight/specs. Come to think of it, my Scott's (John Deere) garden tractor uses synthetic 5W20, and it's gearbox isn't that much smaller than the Metro's!

I'd have to say if there was one fix that reflected the best result it was folks on this forum suggesting Synchromesh :thumb My 3/5 97 was not smooth shifting nor easy when I first got it after two previous owners. I dumped the old stuff which was probably the original lube after 82k from the factory and it was nasty with a lot of gold flakes.
The synchromesh is a delight to shift and almost too easily. Even in sub 0 weather it shifts nice. I'm on my 2nd change of it as I change it out around 40k. For 3 $8 bottles its well worth it. You only need 2.5 quarts. Make sure you can remove the fill bolt first. Blast it with PB Blaster over several hours or a day.

Reading some past posts I may try a GL-4 Synthetic motor oil in my tranny next time, due to the lesser cost.
