Gear Shift Shaft Replacement

Howdy. I recently rebuilt an engine for my 91 Metro and was in the process of putting it back into the car when I noticed that the end of the gear shift shaft was gone. I'd had this tranny in a box for ten years, got it at a $20 Transmission Day at the junkyard and was putting it into the car instead of of the original because it had less than half the miles of the original (which'd lost it's 2nd gear synchro).

So the right side of the shaft shown below is gone and was probably gone when I got it.

I've got the shaft from the old transmission.

I'm guessing swapping the shafts would be way more trouble than getting another transmission at the junkyard tomorrow. Anyone have experience with this? How deep would I have to go to change this?

Thanks.

I am pretty sure this can be changed with out taking the trans down. You can get to it under the weird triangle shaped cover held down by 3, 10mm bolts. Under that cover, there is a 12mm stake bolt holding the cup onto that nubbin. Remove it. The pull the cap bolt coving the dent ball and spring that is shown in the center of the shaft. Then reach down inside with maybe a 1/4 drive set up and pull the last stake bolt. Pretty easy.

Just my $.02...I agree with Mr Murf 59...pull the trans, remove cover, and it can be done...the only thing I would add is replace the shift shaft seal while you replacing the shaft...
