Miata Nardi Torino wheel into Metro?; Trying it, issues already

Howdy,

I happen to have a double life as a Miata owner. I have 2 extra Nardi steering wheels from 99 Miatas sitting around. 1 of them is going to be swapped into my Girlyfriend's 92 Miata, the other was planning on being sold, however I thought it would be neat to have in the Metro.

I went ahead and pulled my GTi wheel and put the Nardi wheel on. At first, just looking at the wheels, it looked like it would it work, however there's an issue with the threads.

If you look closely in this picture you can see that the grooves on the Metro column are just a smidge smaller than the ones on the Miata wheel:

Now, just for temporary purposes I sandwiched a washer behind the nut to capture the wheel and then tightened the hell out of the nut. It is extremely tight and there is zero slippage of the wheel as it sits, but I'm not willing to take the risk. If the nut loosened up while I was driving i'd have exactly 0 steering input.

I'm looking for ideas on how to modify either the Metro's column, the Miata wheel, or both to get this to work safely. I'd rather not remove the column from the car.

Here are pics of how the wheel is in the car right now:

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks!
