Alrighty gurus, I need help. Bought a 1992 civic 4 door 5 speed Friday, drove it about 300ish miles this weekend aaaannnnnddddd....... Its in the shop -_- I've noticed a couple electrical gremlins thus far (check engine light comes on randomly but is always off when I start it?), wants to stall if I hold it at about 1/4 throttle (think its the throttle sensor?), and the dash lights work intermittently.

however, this morning things went interesting. My gf was driving to work and went to turn when (without warning) a massive cloud appeared out from under the hood (think its coolant) and it died. It will not start now. I'm going to call the shop and see what they say, but I want to get an idea if where I need to start with repairs.

thoughts?

Well if you think the smoke was coolant, then the place to start is filling the coolant system and looking for leaks.

The check engine light is a little different on the OBD1 Hondas. The light will come on when it senses the issue. But if you turn off the car, the CEL will not appear until the issue happens again. You need to jump your service connector and check the blinks. The CEL in the dash will blink. 1 short=1. 1 long=10. The ECU stores the engine codes, the dash light may or may not be on though.

As for smoke. Could be a bad alternator. They puff smoke when they blow. Coolant would definitely give you a stream shooting out of the leaking spot. It's a pressurized system.

Do you know what motor is in it? D16Y7 most likely. Honda motors are stamped on the front passenger side of the block. Clearly visable while standing in front of the car.

Compression? Cooling system smell like exhaust?

What you gave use is among the lines of " the check engine light came on in my 2014 Volkswagen. Why?

Insuffient antifreeze solution mixture. Did you check it before winter time to see how low it was protected too?

Or inproper antifreeze. The antifreeze I buy is only good for 20 degree weather.

The USDM LX/CDM EX included an AM/FM cassette player, cruise control, center armrest console, clock, tachometer, power steering, and power windows, locks and mirrors

North America[edit]

All DX and LX models used the D15B7 a 16-valve SOHC engine rated at 102 bhp (76 kW; 103 PS) and 98 ft·lbf (133 N·m) of torque. DX and LX models were aimed towards the economy conscious market

Weight: 2319 lbs

Did some research for you. The B7 is pretty meh as far as engines go. It will do you good though. Very economical and will last. The Y7 and Y8 motors are known to spin bearings, so I was just making sure you didn't buy one of those. The B7 will last a life time. It's not the fastest car or anything, but it makes good torque for the size and displacement and with a manual trans, will be quite quick.

Just some more useless knowledge, the Y7 and Y8 were actually out of the next gen of Civics. So I should have known that from the start. The D16Z6 is a great motor to swap in if you have to. Same generation of civic, but the Si version. It's got VTEC so you can be a fanboy like me :thumb

That's the stock 0-60 and 1/4 mile time based on some car magazines and such.

I'm stoked to see what the mechanic says. I love Hondas, just hate the community in general.

Alrighty. Just got off the phone with the shop, the radiator cap blew :D that's it. So one coolant flush and cap later, it's good to go.
