Question. Its throwing a code 43 and lags in any gear every now and then. Lagging as in I can hold it at 40 mph in 4th with very little throttle, then it'll lose power and make a really loud hum. If I let off the gas it'll buck a little and recover. If I floor it it'll buck really bad and then recover. I can shift gears and it won't buck at all.

also the idle drops really low regardless of temp (some days it idles perfectly fine)

are the 3 of these related?

Hey, I remember this post from awhile back:

Quote:

What is code 43?

Code 43 is "fuel supply system."

This code will trip when the ECU and the readings from the o2 sensor don't get along(in leman's term or easy enough for Si Speed to understand ) read the above two threads).

How to diagnose and fix?

First things first, when was the last time you changed your O2 sensor? Start by replacing that first because most likely, that's the main culprit. Now, you may wonder why doesn't the CEL indicate code 41(heated o2 sensor)? Usually when the o2 sensor is completely dead, that code will trip. Also, even though the o2 sensor is working, the voltage or ground isn't 100% Because of that, it will correlate with code 43.

If replacing the o2 sensor did not help code 43 to disappear, next thing is to replace your fuel filter. A clogged fuel filter will also trip code 43.

Next up, did you install an aftermarket Fuel Pressure Regulator? I have a few friends with 3rd gen Preludes and both of them installed aftermarket FPR's and they too, trip code 43. Him and a lot of people who install aftermarket FPR's mess with the PSI and that will cause code 43 to appear(on a stock ECU mind you). Bring it back to stock PSI to help fight code 43.

Those are the 3 main culprits that will cause code 43 from my experiences. Injectors, spark plugs & wires, most likely anything "fuel' related that isn't working properly will also cause code 43. Fuel delivery has been comprised.

So before you flip out about Mr.43, just take the steps in this thread and figure it out.

CEL 43 is basically a "I need a tune up" code as far as I'm concerned. The fuel filter, spark plug, spark plug wires, distributor cap and rotor, and Oxygen Sensor.

Fuel Filter $10, easy to replace
Spark plugs $12, easy to replace
Wires (Ranges), easy to replace ($40-$75. But the $75 NGK 'blues' have a lifetime warrenty I think)
Distributor cap $12 easy to replace
Rotor $5, easy to replace
O2 Sensor (ranges), moderately difficult ($50~) These can be hard to replace depending on location and if they are seized.

If you need any help with instructions, just post it here and I'm sure I'll check and post something. The basic tune up stuff is really quite easy.

It may not have one? If it does, there should be black hose (heater hose) going to and from it on the throttle body.

They were good cars but a large portion of them ended up being shit heaps due to ricers and people generally not maintaining them. Also some of those earlier v-tec engines were nothing short of little noisy grenades. You should take out your anger on it before you scrap it! With a sledgehammer or perhaps a baseball bat! That's what I did to my pontiac lemans and what I'm going to do to my cadillac :evillol

You should put it on craigslist for 700. Some kid will buy it.

Beats getting 250 for scrap.

:'(

Tears.

That 5 speed tranny is worth almost that.

Honestly, I sold a motor and engine out of one of these for $300. You can get em at that price or cheaper all day every day. If the body was decent, it would have been worth keeping.

I hate to see a Honda get scrapped.

The crusher is the devil! I love my budget friendly 90s cars. The crusher is ruining my used parts business.
