I have a '96 metro 1.3. It had a blown head gasket, so I pulled the motor and had the head re-done. While the engine was out I decided to chanege the clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing. When I got it all reinstalled, the clutch pedal would not push in at all. I saw on this forum that some had moved the TO bearing while re-installing the tranny which caused it to stick. So I pulled the tranny and and very carefully re-installed it. I even removed the clutch lever as to not move it. The clutch pedal then would depress, but the clutch would not disengage. I could shift through all the gears when the engine was running with the front jacked up, but had to "speed shift". Depressing the clutch would still not disengage it. I adjusted the clutch cable as per manual. No difference. I pulled the tranny again, and the TO bearing was in its proper place, but I noticed that when I slightly moce the clutch lever, the TO bearing sticks on the shaft and I have to push it back manually. Any ideas would be appreciated. |

There is a spring on the fork. The main concern is why would the clutch not disengage. The disc was installed properly, with the springs facing towards the tranny. It is a new pressure plate and TO bearing, and pilot bearing. |

Was the flywheel resurfaced? |

You mentioned your removed the TO arm. Were you able to get it back exactly where it was lined up from the factory? And if you surfaced the flywheel, and the cut a bit to much off, it can affect you adjustment. |

No, the flywheel was not resurfaced. I removed the arm on top of the tranny where the clutch cable attaches, and replaced it in the same position. I tightened the clutch cable until there wasn't any play at all, to see if that would give me more "pedal", to make it disengage...nothing. |

There should be just a little free play between the cable and the TO arm. About 1/8" or so. If not it makes the TO bearing want to run all the time causing wear. |

Arm spring not reinstalled correctly (no tension)? TO bearing tab not seated over the pin on the arm? |

Just my $.02...mark clutch arm in the position you have it now, then remove clutch arm, and re-position one tooth clock wise... |

I did try moving the clutch arm, no results. The arm spring has tension, it's just that the bearing gets hung up a little, but that would not keep the bearing from disengaging the clutch, that is more of a side note. The clutch pedal had plenty of tension, and I had a helper depress the clutch while I watched under the hood, and there seemed to be plenty of travel on the clutch arm, just no release. |

Did you have any problem installing the transmission, was it hard to slide on. or did you have to draw it up? |

It seems like it went together well. The splines on the tranny and clutch are not buggered up at all, and the pilot bearing seems fine. |

The only one that I have had problems with was when the owner had the flywheel surfaced and they didn't leave enough offset. So an old disc would work but a new clutch disc wouldn't release. It was a lot of hours of frustration. |

Check the clutch lever and the shaft it bolts to, each of them have a reference mark that should be lined up. When you reassembled did you match them up? They are commonly covered in dirt so you don't even know they're there... |
