HI, NEW 95 METRO HAS THE DREADED DASH CANCER I FOUND OUT. I'M THINKING OF REPLACING IT OR SOMEHOW SCRAPING OFF THE TOP LAYER. 1ST OFF IS A DASH FROM A 2001 4DR LSI THE SAME AS ANY 95-00 2DR? THEY BOTH LOOK IDENTICAL, BUT NOT 100% SURE. WHAT ABOUT TYRING TO SCRAPE OFF THE TOP LAYER OF VINYL THAT IS DISINTEGRATING? ANYONE HAVE LUCK W/THAT? PLEASE LET ME KNOW, THANKS...

The dash is just plastic, and a very poor one at that. I used a razor blade to scrape the dead, flaky, sun rotted plastic off. Don't dig in with the blade, just use it on end as a scraper (blade faces away from the direction you are scraping. Once the dead plastic is removed wipe everything down really well with a paint prep product or denatured alcohol or something similar. You can then paint with a plastic or interior vinyl paint like Duplicolor vinyl paint. They have a color of grey that matches the interior really well, (forget which color it is). You can see what it looks like 10 years after being painted in my project thread, here.

Sir Metrologist

Your looking for a '98+ dash. Any Metro '95-01 has the same dash, but when the name plate was changed over to Chevy in '98 they finally fixed the issues with the plastic.

You should have no issues with that '01 dash you found.

See my thread in my signature below to see the swap in my '96 2dr from a '99 4dr donor.

In a word, Yuck. Always hated the way those look. If it doesn't offend your sensibilities it is a good solution.

SCORE! MY BUDDY JUST FOUND A 99 2DR LSI 4 CYL AT THE WRECKING YARD. HE SAID THAT IT HAS A SUPER DUPER HEADLINER-LOOKS BRAND NEW & A NICE FRONT BUMPER-NOT SURE IF THE 99 WILL FIT ON MY 95, OR IS IT JUST A "CORRECT FOR 98-2000 THING? ALSO A NICE PASS REMOTE MIRROR & TRUNK HATCH LOCK MECHANISM/CABLE & LIKE NEW SHIFT BOOT; A TACH CLUSTER. THE DASH IS JUST PERFECT, SHOULD BE FOR THE CAR ONLY HAS 58K ON IT. I KEEP THINKING ABOUT A DASH SWAP, REALLY NOW AFTER FINDING THIS, HMMMM. THIS IS COOL, I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR A FEW PARTS SINCE I GOT THIS CAR 2 WEEKS AGO, I DON'T NEED THE TACH THOUGH, ALREADY HAVE ONE. IT'S TOO BAD ABOUT THIS LITTLE GUY, IT LOOKS LIKE THE ONLY REASON IT'S IN THE YARD WAS FROM THE PASS SIDE GETTING SIDESWIPED... :(

Agreed.

Face it, if god had meant for man to cover his....*cough*...dashboard parts, with carpet, he would have created (sometime on the 5th day, immediately following the creation of the duck billed platypus, but right before Jeopardy comes on. That's god's favorite show; he gets all wrathful and junk when he misses it.) a mini Roomba, one the size of a hockey puck. Of course, it wouldn't be until after Tesla was born that we'd actually figure out how to put batteries in it and use it.

You should see my dash cover, it is a factory piece so it looks amazing. Not like the aftermarket ones at all! My dash is from 2000 though and has never seen a single day of sun so it is pretty pretty :lol

Which reminds me of the rationalization we were given for "chip sealing" a perfectly new and smooth road. "It will protect the surface."

Oh, like the "cheap seal" fairies will come along and make it all better some day?

Well, in the carpet case, let's call it "art." Besides, my Wife likes it.

Yikes, stop yelling!

Bumper will fit, but won't have any turn signals in it, on the MK5 cars the turn signals are in the headlamp assembly. It'll look ugly as hell too.

Grab that tach cluster! The MK5 engine has a different ignition setup that requires a different tach, and they're VERY rare.

AGREED, THAT NEW BUMPER JUST LOOKS BAD-LIKE THE 95-97 STYLE PERSONALLY-I'LL KEEP TRYING TO FIND A DECENT 95-97 NON PAINTED(LSI). I'LL TRY TO GET THAT TACH CLUSTER, HOW ARE THEY ON TAKING OUT?
