2nd gear grind

2nd gear grinds if I'm not careful on my 97. Tried changing out the fluid with fresh synchromesh, still notchy. Put some synthetic redline 75w-90 in and although it's better, it still grinds about 50% of the time. Oddly enough, double clutching doesn't really help, and if I really guide in the shift into 2nd it won't grind. Are there any linkages that wear out and need bushings replaced, or are they synchros just dying & should I start hunting for a used transaxle?

Just my $.02...I would rebuild it...http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/271147673582?lpid=82 or you probably could get a used one from wrench a part...I know the one in Killeen has one...

It depends on how long its been a problem. If its been a problem for a long time, there could be hard part damage inside the unit. That means gears. If its a new problem, you could likely rebuild it for just labor and a kit. Then you would know the condition of your trans. A used unit is a crap shoot. There are some good units out there, but there are bad ones too.

Until you get it fixed or get another tranny you MUST learn how to "double clutch" A transmission does not "grind" a driver shifts wrong and makes it grind. Here is some reading on double clutching:
