So I'm going to replace the factory stuff. Question is should I put 6.5 3 ways in the front and 6.5 2 ways into the back, or other way around or 3 ways or 2 ways everywhere? This is on a 99 hatchback. Just looking for good clean sound not a system that costs more than the car :hmm

$36 shipped for 4 speakers. They sound better than the factory rear speakers. They are great 'budget' speakers. 6.5" too. I like the 4 I have in my car.

For some reason I didn't get you were talking about speakers until the very last sentence! My first thought was that there just wasn't enough room for a 3-way in the front. My bad.
:smackface

That's a very good price for those. I can't wait to replace all 4 of mine just to find out how bad the 22 yr old factory radio really sounds, but I need to start somewhere.... cheap. I once hired a guy that was Pyle's grandson. I have to admit I briefly considered the idea of requiring him to fork over some new Pyle Drivers to get the job.

I will say, I have some sony 6.5" (x-plode or something) speakers in my Honda that are leaps better than the speakers I put here. They were about $70 for a set though, not $18. Keep that in mind. Kenwood is a good brand too. I have a set of 6x9 kenwoods that I hooked up to a 1000w amp, filtered out a majority of the lows, and blasted for a long time. These $18 speakers are better than factory and are great for daily listening. But spirited, high volume, listening may prove to be beyound their range of performance. With that said. At +0 bass and +2 high, I can turn my aftermarket head unit to the max (45) and these speakers sound crisp and good. They don't handle additional bass well though. Just keep that in mind.

Well this is what I ordered, hopefully it sounds good.
Alpine CDE-134HD head unit, Pioneer TS-G1644R 6.5" 2 ways, Kenwood KFC-1664S 6.5" 3 ways. Shipped with all the mounting stuff $197. Should show up next week sometime. Plus I got a pair of recaro type ricer seats I'm putting in so the little pumpkin is coming along, haven't broke 58 mpg yet maybe the stereo will vibrate it along :P

If you have the time and patience - I have pulled out of a local junk yard Infinity Kappas 3-ways 6.5 and 6x9 at $3 each. As well as 4-6 gauge wire w/fuse holders, 4 pieces of Dyna Mat, extra carpet padding and rubber matting. Picked up a Kole 2400watt mono-block amp last week at a thrift store for $30.00. ^o)

My yard pulls the radios a lot of the time. That and batteries. And rims actually. Basically, the easy stuff. And they sell it up front in the building. But congrats! Pretty good finds.

Do you have them running off of an amplifier? I just installed them and my reaction was, "Well, they're speakers, and they aren't blown."

unobjectionable sound systems are okay, cb. you hit the nail on the head with "they are speakers and they aren't blown."

sometimes the difference between unobjectionable and impressive is around $1000. ;)

when you choose rear speakers you should always select them to have a timbre, or sonic quality that matches the front speakers. you should also adjust the rear level down until you don't hear them over the front speakers. always let the front speakers command the sound stage. all the psycho-acoustic "clues" should come from the front speaker pair. that sets up the stereo effect.

even back in the day of quadraphonic systems and now with sts, dolby surround, etc. the rear speakers play at a tenth of the power of the front speakers most of the time.

4" 2-way in front, 6.5" 3-way in back with 1.5" tweets, 400 W marine amp tucked under the dash where the AC used to be, and a mechless head unit that takes SD and USB input, plus Aux for the Sirius unit. It's all I need. After 3 years in the artillery, I don't need any more loud noises to keep what hearing I have left!

I rairly use rear speakers. Most of my builds are set up for a front stage, if or when I do use use a rear speaker it's just for "fill" to balance the sound. I like to build my systems where the front stage is dominate and sounds like the music is coming from the front center stage.

The only thing I regularly use in the back is the sub and it's crossover is so low that it's in undirectional, you don't notice it's coming from the back.

I like to adjust the left/right, front/back to the positions that the sound seems to come from inside my head.....volumn according to the song.
