I recently put in royal Purple 75-90w gear oil in my Metro 5 speed trans and now, it won't down shift into second unless the car is really warmed up good. I had red line oil in it before and it shifted fine. I see alot of posts with all kinds of different gear oils guys are using so it's confusing as to what gear oil to use. I've e mailed Royal Purple and am waiting to see what they say about it. I'm out about $60.00 for that fluid. I thought it would be the absolute best thing for my Metro.

No matter what you use the syncros are going to eventually wear out.

The early Lube Order books called for 90w. Later they went to the Syncromesh fluid. The friction modifiers in it do nothing for brass syncros. It was made for steel lined sycnros in light truck units. I use straight 30w oil. The stuff on sale. Now if I lived down in the desert, I would use 40 maybe 50w. David is right, eventually syncs wear out.

I put Royal purple 75-w90 in my transmission and was not happy with the results. Googling, I found a white paper testing various gear oils. RP 75W90 was out of spec on viscosity. Meaning its initial viscosity was greater than that required to meet 75W90. Felt bad paying all that money for out of spec oil. Based on user comments on this site, I switched to Pennzoil Synchromesh and I've been happy with it.

Saw a paper I think from Redline. It showed the viscosity versus RPM of the synchro / gear interface. The point was to show that Redline had the best characteristics. What was funny was that straight 30 motor oil was number 2 in the results, beating out several other expensive gear oils.

Once a unit is well broken in. I add a little Prolong for transmissions. That's it. It works great.

Okay, changed out that royal Purple 75-90 weight gear oil and put in Valvoline MTF gear oil and the trans shifts like glass now. Contacted Royal Purple and their recommendation was 10-40 gear oil they have for it. I'll stay with the Valvoline for now, it works fine. 1997 Geo Metro base model 1.0 ltr engine.

I've used Valvoline 75/90 non-synthetic (in a used transmission with unknown miles) for the last 100,000 miles. Still going strong and shifts smoothly.

Is your valvoline choice this synthetic Gl-4? There are so many confusing choices. Curious as to how you arrived at this one, how you narrowed it down

Left this elsewhere but here's a good one, although you probably read it allready
