Transmission won't drive; What broke

Irecently put a new clutch, pressure plate and TO bearing in my 96 Metro. While test driving I heard a loud pop, and lost power to the axles. I would put it in gear and just hear kind of a grinding sound, but no movement. Pulled the tranny, clutch still good, When I turn drive shaft, I can hold the axles andkeep them from turning. Is there a shear pin or something that may have broken? I didn't find any metal in fluid when I drained it.

If the trans is out. Put it in gear and turn the input shaft. Have someone hold the axles. If axles do not turn, there is a problem inside the trans. No do it with all the gears in case its only one shift rail/fork. Look under the flat cover near the bottom, its almost a triangle shape. Pull the bolts and look under it. There is a bolt holding the mixing head on the main shift shaft. They have been known for backing out. And the mixing head only goes on one way.

When I put both axles in and hold them, the same one turns (the passenger side) with the the gear "t" in all the way and out all the way. I can only feel 3 stops, how do I tell which gear it is in. The main bolt looked fine? It didn't seen to effect anything. It was just going through a rod that came from the top of the tranny.
