ok, i have a 89 metro, 5 speed manual tranny. this thing refuses to have a 5th gear, lol. i have been in it 3 times.. checked & double checked everything & still no 5th gear. when it started popping out i took off the black cover & found a worn shift fork. replaced that, put it back together & still no 5th. sooo.. i took it off again, checked the high speed hub, everything looked good, good keys, good springs, ect. checked the phillips screws on the flat plate behind the gears, (which i had forgotten to do previously), they were tight, so i put it back together... again.... still no 5th. took it apart the 3rd time, very carefully checked everything, made some adjustments & put it together again... (this damn thing has a mind of it's own im tellin ya) !! so... im at my wits end :die is there anything inside the main housing that helps keep it in 5th ?... such as a ball & spring on the shaft or something ? my next step is to try to find a new gear & hub, since there is a little wear on the teeth (dont look like enough to make it pop out of gear but what do i know) is there somewhere that these can be bought ?... if so, any idea of the price ?... i refuse to go into it again until i know more than i do at this point.... by the way, i did put it in gear with the cover still off... looked like it was working perfectly... i really need help... (no psychiatrist jokes please lol.. i already know im insane), B-)

make sure your motor mounts arent broken. also check the linkage for looseness.

motor mounts seem ok, rubber isnt broken or anything. i have read several places that when they get old the rubber gets soft & can cause this problem. is there an easy way to check them ? i mean i could try shaking the engine but i dont know how much (shake) is normal...im not financially able to spend much on troubleshooting. as for the linkage there is no slack, rubber bushings are good. she shifts like a new car other than the 5th gear popping out. im pretty sure it's a transmission problem but cant rule anything out. thanks for the input bansheetaz.

UPDATE, i found the spring & ball that is on the 5th gear shaft in the transmission... thats not the problem. i put a little more pressure on the spring & that didnt hold it in 5th gear... back to square one......... looking for a new gear & hub sleeve unless someone has a better idea. and no, im not putting a bunjie cord on the shifter to hold it in... dont wanna change another shifting fork, lol

Have you tried unhooking the linkage to the trans and shifting it that way? Is it just not selecting, or is it jumping out?

hey mr murph. no i havn't disconnected the linkage but it's shifting good into 5th gear.. i checked it with the cover off & also by driving it. what its doing is going into gear fine, then popping out after a few seconds of acceleration. when doing the driving test, i put my hand on the shifter very lightly so as to feel what it was doing without holding it in gear. what i felt was, it stayed steady for a few seconds, then i slowly felt the shifter pushing back toward neutral, until it finally popped out of gear. are new parts available for this car ?...im pretty sure i need the 5th gear & the sleeve/ slider that the fork pushes in, as the teeth on both parts are all worn about 1/4 of the way where they meet on the sides.. the ends arent worn much... whats your opinion on this ? im not sure how much wear is common on these.

Yep, that's it, the part that is gone allows the gear to walk off. Doesn't take much to allow it to pop out of gear. When done, be sure to put 2 1/2 quarts in. If the car is at an angle it is easy to under fill the trans and 5th depends on the oil coming in through a hole at the top. If it's not full you starve it for oil. Don't ask how I know...

hey david, thanks for the link... problem is, i cant afford almost $200.oo to have 5th gear right now. anybody know where i can get cheaper parts ? if i could find a used gear & sleeve with little to no wear, i'd settle for that.
