Auto trans shift/park interlock; hard to shift out of park, related to rake interlock

Hey guys and gals!

I don't know much about auto trans at all. I do know my geo has a sticker by the shifter that says "press brake to shift from park" or something.

The car is getting increasingly hard to shift out of park. Meaning to push the button on the shifter in -all other gears shift fine, and I've isolated it to the brake/park interlock.

Can I disable this? How is this repaired properly? Anyone have a manual scan, as I can't even find my haynes manual right now!

thanks - mark

Remove the cover to the shifter and remove the activated plunger that prevents the shifter from moving and just tie strap it out of the way somewhere.

after i changed my steering column i could not shift out of park, took the covers off the column and where the cable when i put a 1/2 of a spring from a ink pin so get the little lever to move. on the back of the center console there is a button u can either push or pull to get to shift if the battery is dead, try that if it works then it has to do with the cable

The shift manual release is located in a oval cover with a screw in it on the side of the shift cover near your right knee...insert finger and push tab which slides front to rear...the shift release has two safeties: one is a cable attached to the lock cylinder to the right side of the shift lever, the other is an electric solenoid mounted on the left side of the shift lever, which operates off the stoplight switch to a relay...check your grounds...

this car is such a beast that I decided to just leave it neutral and use the parking brake, FWIW. The TCM Is also unplugged so I have to shift it manually anyways
