1999 Metro 3 cylinder 5 speed. It started today on a 20 mile trip about half way there when I shifted to 5th gear I heard a whining noise. This is only happening in 5th gear. Anyone able to help me? I drove in 4th gear all the way back and there was no noise. This happens each time I use 5th gear. The noise is not very loud but is noticeable.

Have you checked the fluid level? Sounds like it is low.

Behind 5th gear (in the black casing bolted onto the trans) there is a plate with 5 screws iirc. I had it where those screws broke/came loose and the gear was rubbing that plate making the noise.

Mine was worse and did it in all gears, but if you decide to add fluid to your trans, you might as well pull that cover off and look....

It was low on transmission oil. I put the Pennzoil Synchromesh in it and drove down the interstate highway and it did not make the noise. It threw me for a moment but found the speedometer cable and it was covered with a rubber boot. I never saw the rubber boot on illustrations posted. Took the one screw out holding the housing and it came right up. Thanks for the help guys.

^^^^^This!!!

Now would be a great time to pull your tranny and pop the black hat off. Once you do that, you will be able to see if one of the Phillips head screws have backed out of the backing plate.

Page one post #4. Look for yourself and see. Do it now before you have a bigger problem later on.
