92 Vert. Here's an eBay link for high-output alternator. I know pretty little about this stuff tbh. Otherwise this eBay link for a standard alternator is my next choice. Gotta replace my alt, I don't really have the ability to stop working every day and take my daily driver down to get it repaired/refurbed. Is that high output one worth the effort? / Too expensive? Are there better alternatives or options for other models that have the same mounting? I gotta make a decision pretty quickly unfortunately and would love some opinions. I buy things from Ebay. However, an alternator is not one of those items which is advisable to buy from an auction or BIN seller. Find a NAPA. Tell them you want an alternator. Here's a hint. My favorite is the 55 Amp Mitsubishi Electric, now overhauled by Bosch. http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/CatalogItemDetail.aspx/Alternator-Remfd-55-Amp/_/R-BSAAL4500X_0416331831 Get a new alternator belt. http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/CatalogItemDetail.aspx/Belt-Alternator/_/R-ATM3PK815_0257874434 Have Dad help put it on. ![]() Somewhere on the forum, there is a how to change your alternator. If you need to read that . . . well . . . One adjuster bolt on the arm, one bolt and one nut on a bolt on the bracket to the engine. The belt should play a musical note when you pluck it with a finger when it's properly tightened. Nothing soprano, mind you, just in the musical range. Make sure to have your battery load tested. You might kill your new alternator if your battery needs to be replaced. Speaking of batteries, make sure to remove the negative cable from the battery prior to replacing the alternator. |

lol The BF knows well of my alt. We change the belt pretty much monthly because it stretches with the really crazy weather changes and whatever else here. Squealing and screaming is usual with my car. If anyone knows anything to fix that as well, my forever gratitude would be towards you. I have a link in my bookmarks for installing a tensioner off another car and how to convert it, just haven't had the time to get to a junk yard or take on another task in the last 7 months unfortunately. Also this is the battery I just bought. Not the same model # I'm sure, but same kind. Tired tired tired of old leaky battery. I don't care if it's expensive, not the best, whatever. I saw leak-proof and vibration resistant and was sold. lol I had to buy new mounting brackets and everything because the acid leaked and ate through the steel of my last bracket. I am NOT dealing with that again. Edited by Zombie, Feb 19 2014, 05:38 PM.

And everything on that link to adventure, thank you btw could not find that anywhere, seems to confirm that it's just for trackers/sidekicks? My dad really does love Napa.. I hate hate hate the one here cuz the guys are dbags to the fullest extent. Same has gone the way of Autozone. I've got really crappy products from both of them. He however complained that the price of the Bosch one from them is far too much $, and wants me to buy a 50$ used junkyard one from eBay instead. (Uh, no thanks) Bleh. As far as I'm concerned, if I'm spending over 100$ I'd rather it be an upgrade, instead of the same amps. Just not sure how complicated an install that would be. |

Remember this? I can't say that I disagree.
You're going to pay for an overhaul with a warranty. In my opinion, there is no better alternator than the Mitsubishi Electric 55 amp for the Geo Metro. You might have the Denso alternator. They're good, also. "Upgrades" are peoples opinions and experiences about what will fit. Your results may vary. Your "conversion" time will far exceed replacement time. Your "conversion" expense will be much more than a freshly overhauled alternator from NAPA. I would suggest the Pick-n-Pull on Hall Street in St. Louis, except they haven't had a Geo Metro with an alternator that would fit your car for quite some time. So, here's a 55 amp, OEM and unmolested, low mileage Mitsubishi Electric alternator on Ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/111224522428 Never mind it looks like crap. Drop it off at a quality electric shop and ask them to "clean it up a bit". You should get off for around $35 to $50. Do not use the work "overhaul". Ask for an estimate. Don't call them. Drop it off on Monday, pick it up on Friday, or whenever they call. If you don't want to spend money cleaning it up at a shop, do it yourself. As long as it tests good at your local auto parts store, and the drive end bearing isn't making noise, it will work for a very long time. I have never purchased a new alternator. All of mine are Pick-n-Pull or other in service resurrections. http://geometroforum.com/single/?p=443226&t=4134400 http://geometroforum.com/topic/4134400/

Gates belts have been my favorite for a long time. Currently, I'm trying out the Goodyear Gatorback belts on my car and Mythstae's. So far, so good. One adjustment after the initial installation, and good to go. What kind of belts are you using? |

Been using the Gatorback ones for a few years. Install, adjust, done. Maybe one adjustment 2 to 3 yrs later. Can't beat them. |

DO NOT buy Carquest alternators. for some reason the Metro alternators I was using were failing after only 2-3 weeks of use. I stopped using Carquest electrical parts altogether. Their Dodge coils didn't last long either. I never had an issue with Napa or Advance Auto replacement alternators. |

My worry is that I've dealt with most the shops around here for one thing or another. They all screw you and do shit work. Unfortunately that's why I'd rather buy new. I'm not concerned about the price.
Gates indeed. I go through one every few months. I looked for the Gatorbacks but can't seem to find the right size? |

Also, if anyone clicked the second link for the alternator, isn't that a Mitsubishi already refurbed? |

It is indeed a Mitsubishi. Just like the one I have for my '90. |

Why would you need to change the belt every month? Now... When you tighten up the belt - are you tightening *ALL* the bolts back up? Are ALL the bolts still in place on the bracket screwed to the block? That alternator bracket on the bottom is kinda hokey... It's held in place by 2 bolts into the side of the block and 1 into the front of the block... If they aren't tight - the alternator wobbles around and ruins belts.... If they are broke off - same... Many of the brackets I have seen are broke or the bolts are tight - but not actually holding the bracket... like they needed washers but loctited them in place.... Then... When you tighten up the belt.. 3 bolts on the Alternator... Make sure you tighten those BOTTOM bolts... Both the Front and the Back bottom bolts... Those are a Royal PITA unless you have a big jack and love laying on your back under a car.... If you don't - the alternator wobbles around and eats belts... |
