second and 5th gear issues

Hey so my post maybe a little different but same issue I guess. I am building a dune buggy and bought a geo metro 94 with the 1.0 and 5 speed as a donor for the power plant on my buggy. The car I bought 2nd gear absolutely does not engage. I can pull the shifter back in to where 2nd should be but it grinds. Previous owner said it quit about a month back. He also said 5 pops out occasionally. I figure shift forks sliders synchro brass and maybe gear sets. I haven't ever dug into one of these so I am looking for advice is it worth rebuilding or should I buy another tranny? Where is the best place to get good replacement parts? I found a ton on ebay but I don't want to build it and have them fail immediately.I found other posts about the 5th issue and think that is cake. but I am more concerned with 2nd.
on another note I bought this car in the city i live in about 5 miles from my shop and so i decided to drive it there. no second and the clutch out. I was able to get it to 35 mph but it took a while the clutch slips so bad. I only got the middle finger twice and a couple funny looks.
Any advice and help is much appreciated.
Thank you

Welcome to the forum. If your going to be using this unit in a dune buggy, build it. Or have it rebuilt. A used one is a big question mark??? There is a how to guide on this trans here. A nice upgrade for your project might be putting a 1.3 fly wheel and clutch in this buggy. Its a larger clutch disk, and a lighter flywheel.

I use a local transmission shop for rebuilding the 1.0 manual trans and they use the exact kit below and give a two year warranty only charge 250 dollars that's in high price California I bet you could get a better price where you are located.
