Hey all, Im trying to replace my cv shafts with some new ones, but there's the end of the shaft that goes into the differential that I cant get out. According to the alldatadiy website it looks like youre supposed to just pry them out. I tried that but it aint budging. Do you guys know any special tricks to getting that end of the shaft out of the differential or is there maybe another step I need to take to get this stupid thing out of there? 1995 2door HB 3cyl 5spd |

As long as you have the hub side removed first, it will pry out. Sometimes can be a little stubborn. A little wiggling, and different pry bar angle, will help. Pushing in, and rotating first, will relocate the circlip retainers. Then try again. Be patient. It will come out.

Right. Axles that won't come out . . . Dear Geo Metro Forum, I never believed your stories about axles that wouldn't come out of the transaxle were true, until it happened to me. As it turns out, my girlfriend took pictures of the reason why axles won't come out. The aftermarket circlips are not the same as the OEM circlips that go on the end of the axle. These have come to be known as "WTF Clips". ![]() Metroschultz had a problem getting an axle out, and discovered that brute force is required. That force is a slide hammer with a particular attachment. Slide Hammer - http://www.ebay.com/itm/330774218398 Attachment - Great Neck OEM 27058 Front Wheel Drive Axle Pulley Attachment http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004FENA7W/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Make sure your clips on the ends of the axles look like the OEM. |

I had trouble removing one from a metro five speed transmission on the bench. It ended up breaking the clip and I had to fish it out of the bottom of the transmission in pieces. It took a lot of force. I have never had that problem removing axles from anything else. Was it a original or aftermarket axle, I do not know. I would definately attempt everything I could like snowfish suggested before using brute force with a slide hammer. Brute force has a way of ruining things sometimes. That being said, if yours is as hard to get out as mine was, you will likely have to resort to brute force in the end. |

![]() Usually, the axles pop right out of the transaxle with minimal effort using a screwdriver. Snowfishing them out is by all means preferable to having to use a slide hammer. I've owned my slide hammer for years. The axle removal adapter is a recent acquisition. |

Well it was the right hand shaft that I had trouble with and what I ended up doing was I took a tie rod splitter, approached from above, stuck the wedge behind the cv joint cup and hammered the tie rod splitter through. it did break a piece of the snap ring off so ill have to fish that out from the drain plug hole hopefully but I did finally get it out of there!

There's a triangular cover right above the drain. Take out the three bolts, remove the cover, and you'll be able to see a whole lot more of the inside of the flashlight. |

i use this setup. yesterday i replaced both side axles and using this tool it's a breeze. i used to struggle with large screw drivers and hammers prying away for hours on end with nothing to show but a bent output seal and marred transmission case. |

My new axles had the WTF clips on them. I took them off and reused the OEM clips with good results. Just after I did that job with a loaner slide hammer, I picked up a set just like the one on eBay for about that price. It's a must have!! |
