So I had this filter on my Metro before the rebuild and thought I'd take it apart after watching some similar videos online. For your viewing pleasure here is some of a Fram HM3614 in all it's "glory"

I counted 40 Pleats if that means anything to you guys.

Some kind of gel that I suppose is released over time for high mileage engines.

What type of oil?
It was Mobil 1 High Mileage stuff. 5 0r 10W-30. As for the miles they weren't many since this was the one with the broken piston skirt that I rebuilt.

I do wish I'd taken pictures of the first oil filter after the rebuild. There was definitely evidence of the breaking in process. Interestingly enough the CEL was one for a while after the rebuild but after about a thousand miles or so it stayed off. It was throwing a code that had me thinking the CAT was bad or I'd missed something and was burning oil but it all turned out in my opinion to be part of the break in process. Who knows?

I've been using Fram filters and Castrol oil on the Samurai since 1995. 210,000 miles with no problems yet.

They're simply an inferior product. Perhaps they're equally effective (though there is substantial evidence to the contrary), but I'd rather have a quality oil filter rather than take a risk. The cost is minimally different, and I've had personal experiences (negative), that make the decision valid for me.

You do not have to make the same decision, but I highly encourage your to read others' experiences before mindlessly trusting your vehicle to this brand:

There have been several people who have cut open filters to find out how they are constructed,

In my 30 plus years of driving and owning over 60 odd vehicles I have never had a problem with Fram oil filters. I use them all the time.
If they really were that inferior they would not be selling them.

People hear all this Fram is crap talk and when something happens to their engine they will realize they have a Fram oil filter and come to the conclusion, without any kind testing, that the filter is to blame. That's how this shit keeps on rolling.

[/quote]please site some of your "personal experiences(negative)".

please include specific information which is not subjective.

did you have an engine failure in which Frams warranty paid to repair?

please support your statement with some empirical evidence.

HEARSAY doesn't count.

Old Man

Been using Fram filters since about 1950 or so. So many vehicles I have lost count. Not necessarily ALL the filters I have used, but many of them.
Never had a problem that I can attribute to the filter.

Never heard of a problem with Fram filters til I came on this forum. Never heard of a problem with Fram filters from any other source.

Just my personal experience. Do what you damn well want to, That's what I will do for sure.

I bought a toyota truck brand new in 1986. Much of its life has been loaded with tools, pulling a heavily loaded utility trailer or pulling an 18' aluminum cuddy cab boat.
Rarely has it moved empty. I have used fram filters because they were locally available and everybody else used them.
The truck now has 469,000 miles on it and because of what I have heard on this forum I am now expecting it to fail prematurely.
