half shaft loosely locked in transmission

Replaced the half shafts on my 94 Geo 5 speed. The driver's side shaft locked firmly into the transmission. The passenger side shaft locked in but has about 3/8" play at the transmission when I pull on the wheel.

Are the axles new or used?

Did you reuse the locking clips? You should've, most aftermarket axles have the wrong clips on them

Installed the shafts right out of the box.

Where can I purchase the correct clips?

When you pull on the hub (the part that connects to the transmission with a C clip), does that part move 3/8 of an inch?

If you are pulling on your wheel, there are other things that can make your wheel feel loose like a worn out tie rod or a bad wheel bearing. A worn out wheel bearing will feel like the rim is not tightened down all the way. When you try to move the wheel with your hands, the wheel will feel loose.

When I pull on the wheel I can see the shaft move slightly in and out of the transmission. It snapped in place but still has some movement at the transmission.

Wheels bearings were replaced last year.

I just checked my driver's side hub and it moves at least 1/8 of an inch. I would suggest waiting for some of the other mechanics to respond.

I would compare it to the old one, make sure the spline is the same length.

I researched part numbers and found that a right half shaft for a 94 and earlier is a different size from a 95 and later.

My 94 had a transmission replacement at some time. Could it have received a transmission from a 95 or later? What is the difference between the two transmissions?

I assume you are talking about 90's cars and not 70's. The transmissions are the same .

Yes sorry meant 90's. (Was typing in the wrong decade, I also have a 75 MGB)

Then some vendors incorrectly market Metro transmissions because they list them as fitting either pre 95 or post 94.

Something must have changed in the tracking from 94 to 95 since the half shafts are slightly different lengths.

The transmissions have different gear ratios, changed when they went to 13" tires. But cases are the same.

Makes sense because when I changed out the 12 inch wheels for 13 inch I also needed to get a speedo gear from a 96 transmission.
